Kakrail (Bengali: কাকরাইল) is a neighbourhood in Dhaka. It is under Ramna Thana and falls under the jurisdiction of Dhaka South City Corporation. Over time, Kakrail has grown into a mostly residential area, with apartment plots and schools, but subsequently, several NGOs and government offices have been set up there.

Etymology

Kakrail may be named after the British commissioner to Dacca, Cockerell. The name "Kakrail" is a Bengali corruption of "Cockerell".[1]

Geography

Kakrail is located in south central Dhaka and hosts the Ramna Model Thana. Kakrail is in Ward No. 19 of Dhaka South City Corporation.[2] To the north of Kakrail lies Siddheswari. Shatinagar of Paltan Thana is to the east and northeast of Kakrail. Kakrail touches Shahbag Thana to the south via Segunbagicha. Ramna Park lies to Kakrail's west.[citation needed]

Kakrail hosts the Ramna Model Thana, which was previously in Moghbazar. Parts of Moghbazar were put under Hatirjheel Thana after its creation, hence the police station was moved to Kakrail, opposite to Segunbagicha, to make it closer to other neighbourhoods in the thana.[citation needed]
