KalaCharan, 38, is a Music Composer/Percussionist, born and bred in Singapore, now based in Chennai, Singapore. He is a song Writer, Music Producer, Arranging and Composing.
He started as a percussionist/drummer at age 5, thus honing his skill in music making. He was part of his symphonic and military band during his school days, where he was exposed to various genres of music and performances. This enhanced him further in managing musicians and getting the best out of them. During his tertiary years, he was part of many project bands in the genres of Rock, Pop, Jazz, New Age, World Music styles. This got him enthralled into Music composing, thus he got involved in Audio Technology.
He has done numerous works in Advertisement Jingles, Music for Animation Films and Music for feature films too. His keen interest in Sounds and Textures is his forte.
Early life
Kalacharan, in short called as KC, was born on 26th of February 1980 as Saravanan in the city island of Singapore to father R Sivappragasam and mother S Pakiam. He is the youngest among his family of two elder sisters. He finished his studies in Singapore majoring in Electronics Engineering. His Musical interests at an early age took him to tour with many bands during his tertiary years. Though he did not have a formal learning of Music, he took his experiences with the various musicians he had worked with as a learning curve to compose original Music. He took a leap of faith to move to the bustling city, Chennai, to pursue his dream as a Music Composer.
Career
After moving to Chennai in 2008, without the know-how or any connections to the media, he started from scratch to understand the dynamics and practicality of the industry there. He started off doing small works such as recording dub sessions to jingles, to even teaching Music enthusiasts Audio softwares, which he had self-taught. His first release was a horror film named, Unakkena Venum Sollu (What Do You Want)[1], produced by Auraa Cinemas in 2015, which had a decent run in the theatres and is now available on Netflix. Followed by which, in 2017, he did a social thought-provoking indie film, Sivappu Enakku Pidikkum (I Like Red)[2], produced by JSK Film Corporation, which dealt with the dark side of people. Currently, in 2018, he is scoring for two Tamil and one Kannada releases. In Tamil, from the producers of the critically acclaimed film Uriyadi [3] comes Theeviram and MaMaKiKi! In Theeviram, ace director Gautham Vasudev Menon [4] has a role in it.
On October 29th 2018, the first single from Theeviram was released by Ondraga Entertainment[5] which garnered good reviews amongst Music lovers. In Kannada, he is working on a film called Birbal: Trilogy [6]. It’s being directed and starred by MG Srinivas [7]. On October 15th 2018, a single was released titled ,Ragini Madam. Not constrained to Films only, he has scored for various Tv shows and App-based series globally. A significant production he worked on would be Avenue 14, a Sci-Fi horror series for Singapore’s MediaCorp Channel 5.[8] The weekly series premiered on Nov 12th 2018.[9]. Also, he has and is scoring a number of Title Theme songs for Singapore’s Vasantham Channel.[10]. On 23rd March 2018, he released a self-titled album with his Internationally lined-up band, The Silent State [11]. The members are all over the globe from Singapore, India, Australia, US and Germany. They are currently working on their second album due for 2019 release.
Musical influences
KC credits a variety of bands as his musical influences. Ranging from bands such as Nirvana, Dream Theater, In Flames, Blind Guardian, Iron Maiden to Composers such as Yanni, Phillip Glass, Brian Tyler, Hans Zimmer etc... MSV, Ilayaraja, Yuvan Shankar Raja are Regional Film Composers he looks up to. He believes that the nuances and the cocktail of World Music has to be explored extensively without diminishing the authenticity of one’s genre.
