Kalaimamani Padma Shankar, is an Indian Violinist, Vocalist,[2] as well as Educator who performs Carnatic classical music. She first held a violin at the age of 3. She has performed in many music festivals and institutions, across India and abroad.

Early life[edit]

Padama Shankar[3], born and brought up in Mumbai. Belonging to a family of musicians and being related from her maternal side to Muthuswami Dikshitar, Padma was enrolled in music classes at the age of five by her mother Lakshmi Narayanan, a vainika and a singer. She came under the wing of Lalgudi’s disciple Ramakrishna Sharma in Mumbai at the age of eight.

After learning Carnatic vocal under her mother, she started learning the violin under Ramakrishna Sharma, a disciple of Lalgudi Jayaraman[4]. When she got to meet the great violinist in Mumbai, she told him that she wants to do advance training under him.

Performance Career[edit]

She holds a master's degree in Indian Music (MA) from the university of madras, with an “A “graded artiste in All India Radio and Doordarshan. She has performed in many music festivals and institutions, across India and abroad. Currently, Padma is an Advisor in Shankar Mahadevan Academy wherein she has developed and created the entire curriculum for Carnatic Music.

Padma[5] has performed all over the world. Her first ever Carnatic Classical Symphony premiered in Singapore. Being a part of the Laya Project Live (world music) Padma, has performed in a world tour to Australia and Israel. She also performed at the premier of “Traveller” (contemporary music) in Girona, Spain and she is also a great lyrics writer.

Padma has launched the digital platform “ Violin Padma - Select Club[6] “ on n April 4, 2019.The access for this is for subscribers exclusively. Anyone can listen to Padma‘s latest recordings, read about what she writes on her blog, watch special videos of her music covers and performances and be inspired.
