Kalamandalam Neeraj[1][2] (born on 15th January 1988) is a Kathakali artiste from Kerala in India.

Biography

Neeraj was born on January 15, 1988 at Kolathur in Malappuram district of Kerala, to Mohandas P and CV Geetha M. At the age of 12, he joined Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University in the year 2000 and began his Kathakali training under the veteran Kathakali artist Kalamandalam Shanmughan. He later received advanced training under renowned gurus such as Kalamandalam Ramadas, Kalamandalam Surya Narayanan, and Kalamandalam M. P. S. Namboodiri[3] He completed his post-graduation under the guidance of the acclaimed Kathakali performer Kalamandalam Balasubramanian, he also completed a scholarship training program under the same guru.[4]

Career

After completing his studies at Kalamandalam, he began performing Kathakali.[5][6][7]He is currently working as a Second Grade Instructor at Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed to be University.[8] Kalamandalam Neeraj is an all-rounder in Kathakali, adept at performing all major role types including Pachcha, Kathi, Thadi, Kari, and Minukku.[9][10]

The Old Man and the Sea Kathakali Version

Neeraj has directed a show that combines Kathakali, theatre, and dance, based on Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea.[11][12][12][13][14]

Awards and honors

Neeraj has received several honors and recognitions, including being graded as a B-high artiste by Doordarshan.[10] His awards include: Navabhava Mudra by Chalakudy Kathakali Club, 2019, V. S. Sarma Endowment, 2017, Kamala Ramapishradi Smaraka Award by BCKA, Bangalore, 2015, Kottakkal Krishnan Kutty Nair Smaraka Endowment, 2012 Yuvam Suvarnamudra, 2011, Mahakavi ONV Kurup Endowment, 2008, Achyuthakkurup Memorial Endowment, 2005.[15]
