The Kalay massacre occurred when the Tatmadaw fired upon protesters while taking down barricades in the town of Kalay during the 2021–2023 Myanmar protests.
Background
The first instances of clashes between armed protesters and the Tatmadaw in Kalay occurred on March 28. The armed protesters organized themselves into the Kalay Civil Army and proceeded to engage in battles with the Myanmar security forces.[1]
Massacre
On 7 April 2021, the Myanmar security forces tasked with taking down barricades set up by protesters in Kalay, fired upon the barricades with "...at least 20 rocket-propelled grenades."[2] The security forces fired upon the protesters with rifle fire and, in response, armed protesters clashed with the security forces throughout Kalay with homemade weapons and hunting rifles. The clashes resulted in the death of 11 protesters and 10 of them being wounded by the security forces.[1]
