Kaleem Haider Sharar

Kalim Haider Sharar (born 01-October-1951 in Mumbai – died 25-August-2001) was an Urdu poet who wrote ghazals in the Reekhta style. Used his pen-name or takhallus - nom de plume as "Sharar" (Urdu: شرر, sharar means "spark").

Association

Sharar was secretary and convener of “Bazm e Ghalib” which organization conducted Mushaera, Adabi Nashist, Mukalema and other hue and casts in 8th decade of bygone century. Sharar was regularly published and cited in daily newspapers under Adab o Saqafat column viz. Inquilab Urdu, Urdu Times, Dawn, Al-Fateh Weekly published from Mumbai, Maharashtra, in India as well as popular urdu magazines like Aaj Kal, Shaer (also written as Shair/Shayar), Naya Daur, Biswin Sadi and Aiwan-e-Urdu monthly periodicals by "Urdu Academy" - published monthly from Delhi in India and Suhail published monthly from Gaya, in India. Although, Sharar was not in favour of commercialization of Adab, he agreed to appear in on-air programs for television channel Doordarshan and All India Radio, All India Mushaera etc. He was also sung by prominent Qawwals, chiefly Aziz Nazan.

Recently, posthumously after 13 years, an article titled "کلیم حیدر شرر، کیا ہم نے تمھیں بھلا دیا؟" / "Kaleem Haider Sharar Have we forgotten you?" [Translated from Urdu], by Nadem Siddiqui, in the Mumbai, Urdutimes daily, dated June 8, 2014 was published regarding his literary work.

Life History

Sharar Inherited his literary comportment from his father Sibte Hasan who was a Principal at Municipal Corporation School at Bhatwadi area of Ghatkopar in Mumbai. His father Sibte Hasan is also known for writing an authoritative book on urdu grammar titled “Urdu Grammar and Composition”, which is presently in education syllabus in Indian urdu schools and colleges. Sharar completed his higher studies from Maharashtra College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Byculla, Mumbai and Kishenchand Chelaram College (K. C. College), Churchgate, Mumbai and graduated from Arts. At K. C. College he was the first student who won “Mirza Ghalib Urdu Elocution Trophy” for Bazm-e-Sukhan.

In October 1977, He married to Kaneez Bano alias Rukhsana. She was the daughter of Wasee Ahmed who was also Ustad Shaer of his time known by his pen name Awarah Sultanpuri, a retired Serviceman. Awarah Sultanpuri, more popularly known for his Nazm "Maa Tera Pyar which begins with the following stanza:

Khuda ke baad gar insaan ko sajda rawa hota 
yaqeenan sab se pehle maa ko ye rutba mila hota 

(Translation: If at all, it was allowed to prostrate to a human being, definitely the first and foremost "Mother" would have been given this Stature)

This nazam was later on sung by well known Qawwal Aziz Nazan in his Album “Main Nashe Mein Hoon” Musical album by Aziz Nazan, Release date: April 26, 1992, Artist: Aziz Nazan, Label: Venus Worldwide Entertainment Pvt.Ltd.

In the year 1983, Sharar was employed by Godrej & Boyce, Vikhroli, as a Test Typist while he retired in his capacity as Quality Control Officer in 1999. In 1990, Sharar took up residence in Mumbra area of Thane district in Mumbai Suburbs. Sharar moved to his eternal abode on 25-August-2001 by reason of a cardiac failure. He is survived by 3 Sons viz. Minhal Husain, Aadil Husain, Rizwan Husain and two daughters Nafees Zahra and Sadaf Zehra. Collections of his poetic works such as Ghazals, Azaad Nazm, Nazm, Rubai, Qataat, Soz o Salam and Manqabat is under publication process in form of a book, presently his literary work is in review phase.
