Kalinzu Forest Reserve is situated in Bushenyi district in Western Uganda, approximately 375 Kilometres from the Capital, Kampala.[1]. Kalinzu Forest is adjacent to Queen Elizabeth National Park and maramagambo forest Reserve The forest is approximately 150 kilometers from the famous Bwindi National Park and 235 km away from Kibale National Park[2].The forest reserve is managed by The National Forest Reserve (NFA). Kalinzu forest reserve is Known for its variety of natural tree species and chimpanzees. It covers an area of 147 square kilometers at an average altitude of 1400 m above sea level[1]

Biodiversity

Kalinzu Forest Reserve is a habitat to a variety of fauna and flora. Over 414 tree species have been recorded in the forest, 6 primate species including vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, Olive Baboons, Red-tailed Monkeys, Chimpanzees, and black and white Colobus monkeys[1]

The reserve also harbors 378 bird species, 262 butterflies and 97 moths species, reptiles and several other small mammals have been recorded. Kalinzu forest reserve habours over 300 chimpanzees.

Tourism

Kalinzu forest is one of the best tourist destinations in western Uganda. Chimpanzee trekking is the most common activity with about 70% chance of viewing the chimpanzees[3]. The chimpanzee permits are even cheaper than other National parks and sanctuaries. other primates like olive baboons and monkeys make the nature experience more fun. Other tourism activities include Forest walks, birding, Butterfly identification and small mammal viewing. Kalinzu forest reserve is in proximity of Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi National Park which allows Tourists to have a wide itinerary choice.
