Kalistrat Ivanovich Babakhin (Russian: Калистрат Иванович Бабахин; 2 May 1918 — 22 May 1987) was a Soviet soldier in the Second World War. He was squad leader of the 30th Guards Separate Engineer Battalion of the 26th Guards Rifle Division of the 11th Guards Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front. He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on 24 March 1945, and had the rank of Guards Sergeant.

Biography

Babakhin was born on 2 May 1918 in the village of Kozlovka [ru], Tomsky Uyezd [ru] (now a village in Bolotninsky District, Novosibirsk Oblast), in a peasant family. Russian. Member of the CPSU (b) / CPSU since 1943. He graduated from elementary school and worked on a collective farm.

In 1938 he was drafted into the Red Army. In 1940 he was demobilized, but was recalled to service in May 1942, following the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union. He saw action in the battles of the Great Patriotic War since June 1942. Fought on the 3rd Belorussian Front.

During the war years, he handled no less than fourteen thousand mines. During the offensive, the fighters knew: if the department of K. I. Babakhin was ahead, success was assured.

The commander of the department of the 30th Guards Separate Engineer Battalion of the Guard, Sergeant K. I. Babakhin, especially distinguished himself when crossing the Berezina. On 30 June 1944, under heavy enemy fire, he was the first to reach the opposite bank of the river. On the raft he made, he transported 4 cannons, 42 wagons with ammunition and more than 120 fighters.

On 14 July 1944, while crossing the Neman, he pulled a rope from the right bank to the left. Having hardly crossed the river, fighting off the Germans with grenades and fire, the guard sergeant secured the cable and guarded it until reinforcements arrived. By his actions, K. I. Babakhin contributed to the ferry crossing of artillery, infantry, carts with ammunition and food.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union of 24 March 1945, for the courage and heroism shown during the crossing of the Berezina and Neman rivers, Sergeant Kalistrat Ivanovich Babakhin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 5006).

The sapper went through almost the entire war without a single scratch. But when clearing the approaches to the fortress walls of Koenigsberg, a mine exploded in his hands. He was immediately taken to the medical unit. Surgeons counted ten wounds, but he survived.

In 1946, after several months of treatment in hospitals, Babakhin was demobilized. He returned to his native village as a disabled person of the 2nd group. He worked on a collective farm until 1982. He died on 22 May 1987.
