Kaluki Paul Mutuku (born March 4, 1993) is a Kenyan climate activist and environmentalist. Mutuku is known for his advocacy aimed at increasing youth participation in climate justice decision-making processes.[1] He is the co-founder and director of the Kenya Environmental Activists Network (KEAN), a non-governmental organization that facilitates collaboration among environmental activists and promotes grassroots climate action.[2][3] His initiatives focus on promoting ecological restoration, afforestation, organic farming, and empowering youth leadership in environmental advocacy across Africa.[1][4][5]
Biography
Mutuku was born in Kenya on March 4, 1993. He grew up in a rural community with three brothers and his single mother.[6][7] He spent his childhood in Machakos, an area inhabited by the Kamba people in Eastern Kenya, where he developed an appreciation for nature[7][8][9] and witnessed increasing water scarcity. The challenges his family faced due to changing climatic conditions influenced his engagement in environmental activism.[6][10] He graduated from the Environmental Conservation and natural resource management program at the University of Nairobi,[6][11] and has cited the work of climate activist Wangari Maathai as an inspiration.[8]
Activism and work
Mutuku has advocated for responsible environmental practices and increased youth inclusion in Africa.[4][9] In 1963, forests covered 10% of Kenya; by 2009, this had declined to 6%. Mutuku has voiced concerns about the country's diminishing forest resources.[12][5] He advocates for campaigns opposing environment-degrading practices.[9] During his college years, he was a member of an environmental club. Since 2015, he has been involved with the African Youth Initiative on Climate Change.[10]
Mutuku previously worked as an environmental education officer at A Rocha Kenya, where he trained students, farmers, and communities in organic farming, biodiversity conservation, and Sustainable Development Goals.[1][11] Previous roles include communications lead for the 350.org-Kenya DeCOALonize campaign and working with AYICC-Kenya on the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) project.[6][9][11] The DeCOALonize campaign advocated for the use of Renewable Energy instead of fossil fuel.[9] Mutuku also serves as Coordinator for Environmental Advocacy, Partnerships, and Networking Lead at the Youth Coalition for Environmental Advocacy & Renewable Energy.[13]
Mutuku is currently the regional director for Africa at Youth4Nature, a global initiative promoting youth-led nature-based solutions.[1][11] He is also an ambassador for the Global EverGreening Alliance.[8] In September 2018, he signed a letter addressed to Secretary Ryan Keith Zinke opposing the lease of public land for oil and gas drilling in California.[14]
His organization, Green Treasures Farms, promotes sustainable environmental practices and income generation among rural Kenyan women and youth through organic farming, biodiversity conservation, tree growing, environmental education, and water harvesting.[1][6][11][4]
