Brian Ngugi is a Kenyan journalist currently working for The Standard (Kenya) as an economic journalist.

He has worked as a writer, reporter, editor and financial analyst in various newspapers and news companies in Kenya, such as The Standard Newspaper, People Daily, The Daily Nation, and Business Daily Africa, which is published by Nation Media Group.[1][2] His work has also been featured in The Africa Report, Inter Press Service, and Equal Times.[3][1]

Early life and education

Ngugi was born in Naivasha, Nakuru County in the Rift Valley region of Kenya.

He attended Milimani Primary School and Njoro Boys High School before joining the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication in 2006, graduating with a Diploma in Broadcast Journalism in 2009.

In 2014, Ngugi joined the University of Nairobi and graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor's degree in Science in Political Science and Sociology, with Communication minors.

Journalism career

Ngugi was first employed as a business reporter in 2009 by The People Daily, a free sheet newspaper published by Mediamax Network Limited where he assumed the role of a Senior Special Projects Writer up to July 2015.

On August 1, 2015, Ngugi joined Nation Media Group (NMG) editorial department as a financial analyst and business reporter for Business Daily Africa, a newspaper published by NMG. In early April 2022, he was featured on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) news to discuss reasons behind acute fuel shortages in Kenya.[4] After working in NMG for over 7 years, Ngugi resigned to seek greener pastures ahead of a planned restructuring.[5][6]

In September 2022, Ngugi joined The Standard Group as a senior political and economics reporter, a position he holds to date.[7]

Professional training

Ngugi's background is in Political Science, Sociology, and Broadcast Journalism. He was nominated for the David Astor Journalism Awards in July 2015.

In 2015, Ngugi was a finalist in the ILO global media competition: ‘Reporting Fairly on Labour Migration.'[2]

In 2017, Ngugi undertook a course in investigative reporting conducted by the African Network of Centers for Investigative Reporting (ANCIR).

In 2018, Ngugi participated in a workshop organized by the African-Export-Import Bank dubbed 'Media Workshop on Intra-African Trade, Media and Financial Reporting' in Casablanca, Morocco.[8]
