The town is a significant transport and economic hub for the region, known for its Kalupara Ghat railway station and as a major fish landing centre for the Chilika fisheries sector.[2]

Rail
The town is served by the Kalupara Ghat railway station (Station Code: KAPG), which is a major stop on the Howrah–Chennai main line of the East Coast Railway zone.[3] The station provides connectivity to major cities such as Kolkata, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam.
