Kalwinder Singh Dhindsa (Punjabi: ਕਲਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਿਨਸਾ) (born in Derby) is a British science teacher, author, mental health activist and media commentator.[1]

Career and work[edit]

Dhindsa has been raising awareness of mental health challenges faced by Asian communities after his father Mohinder Singh Dhindsa died by suicide in 2006 aged 51.[2] He credits the death of comic Robin Williams in 2014 for finally starting to understand why his father took his own life. [3]

In 2009, Dhindsa, a Derby County FC supporter, was behind a campaign to build bronze statues of football managers Brian Clough and Peter Taylor to honour their achievements.[4] And in 2011, he designed the first Sikh poppy khanda holder in honour of the 80000 Sikhs that gave their lives in the world wars and raised thousands of pounds for the Royal British Legion. [5]

In 2016, Dhindsa published his first book titled ‘My Father & The Lost Legend of Pear Tree’ which is a story about his father’s suicide.[6] [7] He has since published two poetry books called the ‘Pear Tree Rambler’ and ‘Pear Tree Rampage’ and in 2019 included a poem to honour a 100 year old killed in Derby after surviving Nazis.
