The Kama Sutra Company (operating as Kamsut Inc.) is an American manufacturer of intimacy and personal care products. The company was founded in 1969 and is headquartered in Moorpark, California.[1]
History
The Kama Sutra Company was founded in 1969 by Joe Bolstad and Hal Hauser in Los Angeles, California.[1] Bolstad had previously worked as an advertising director in Los Angeles and attended Art Center College of Design.[1] The company's first product was Oil of Love, a water-based flavored body oil.[1]
By 1986, the company had been covered by the Los Angeles Times.[2]
In 2010, the company was selected as a product sponsor for ABC's Bachelor Pad.[3]
In 2011, the company partnered with the developer of the iKamasutra smartphone application to promote an annual Kama Sutra Day.[4]
Joe Bolstad died on August 20, 2019, at the age of 84, in Westlake Village, California.[1] At the time of his death, the company was being operated by his wife, Marla Lee, as company president.[1]
Name
The company's name derives from the classical 4th century Sanskrit text the Kama Sutra of Vātsyāyana. In Sanskrit, kama refers to love or desire, and sutra means a thread, rule, or guide.[1]
Products
The company manufactures a range of intimacy and personal care products including body oils, body powders, massage oils, massage candles, lubricants, and bath products. Products are distributed in over 50 countries.[4]
