Kamran and Hooman are a Persian pop duo consisting of brothers Kamran Jafari (Persian: كامران جعفري) and Hooman Jafari (Persian: هومن جعفري). The duo raised to fame as part of the popular Persian band Black Cats (1999-2004),[1] which was founded and produced by Shahbal Shabpareh.[2][3] Kamran & Hooman are one of the most influential Persian entertainers and pop artists outside of Iran.[4]

Early Life and Family[edit]

Kamran and Hooman were both born in Guisha a neighborhood in Tehran, Iran. Their family migrated to Quebec, Canada when they were very young. They attended a French-language school and speak fluent French, and in order to preserve their mother language they studied and learned Persian as well.

Kamran Jafari (Persian: كامران جعفري) is the eldest son of the family and was born on December 25, 1978. From a very young age, he showed interest in music and singing, but at the request of his parents, he continued his education to become a pilot technician.

Hooman Jafari (Persian: هومن جعفري) was born on November 21, 1980. Hooman showed interest in music and participated in many musical programs and competitions from a young age, singing in both French and English.[5] Before starting his music career alongside his brother he did some modeling for several companies.

Kamran and Hooman have a younger sister named Katayoon (Katie), she is a sonographer but has also been involved in her brothers' careers by making cameos in several of their music videos.[4] Her first cameo was in Black Cats' music video for "Cat Man"[6], she also appeared in music videos released by Kamran & Hooman including Man Toro Mikham (من تورو ميخوام, "I Want You")[7], Oon ba man (اون با من, "Leave it to Me")[8], Messle Khodet (مثله خودت, "Just Like You")[9], and Khode Hamooni Ke Mikhami (خود هموني كه ميخوامي, "You're Exactly the One I Want")[10]. Katie was also involved in the production and story-line of Kamran & Hooman’s music video for their song Fereshteye Nejat (فرشته نجات, "Angel of Salvation").[11]

Although Kamran and Hooman have not been back to Iran since their childhood, they always show and mention their love for Iran's history, tradition, and people. The brothers are often seen wearing accessories and clothes with the Faravahar symbol, they have explained on many occasions that the reason behind this is not due to religion but as admiration and love for the history of Iran, and as a reminder of where they came from and their origin.[4][12][13]

Beginning of Music Career[edit]

Kamran became acquainted with music producer Ramin Zamani, who formed the musical group Parvaz in 1996, with Kamran as a member alongside Fereydoun Asraei and Hengameh. Together they released the song Iran Iranam (ايران ايرانم), and although the song was well received the group disbanded shortly after, with the members going solo.[14]

After his separation from Parvaz Kamran became acquainted with Shahbal Shabpareh, the founder of the well-known rock/pop group Black Cats. Shahbal offered Kamran a position in the band after seeing his musical potential and talent. Kamran was the one who introduced Hooman to Shahbal who saw the potential in Hooman as well, and together they became official members of Black Cats in 1999.[5][1]

Black Cats released their 5th studio album and their first album with Kamran and Hooman as lead singers, titled “Cinderella” in 1999, the album was well-received and very popular among the younger Iranian generation. In 2003, “The Popfather” was released and it marked the last album with Kamran and Hooman as members of Black Cats.[3] After their departure from the band, on an interview with Tapesh TV Kamran said that the main reason for their separation from Black Cats was due to differences in musical taste.[12]

Ramin Zamani and Saeed Siam have been supportive of the brother’s musical career since the very beginning and it was through Ramin that they were introduced to the famous Iranian poet and lyricist Maryam Heydarzadeh, who went on to write many songs for the duo including songs on their first independent album as Kamran & Hooman.[15][13][16]

20 (Album) - present[edit]

Kamran and Hooman released their first album as a duo on June 17, 2005 titled 20 or Bist (بيست, "Twenty"). The album was well-received and the duo went on a world tour right after.

In 2007, after the end of their tour, Kamran and Hooman released a Remix album with Avang Music. The album included a remix of 5 songs from the their album "20" with 2 new songs called Dooset Daram (Kheyli Ziad)((دوسِت دارم (خیلی زیاد, "I love you (so much)")[17] and Kheyli Mamnoon (خیلی ممنون, "Thank you very much").

In 2009, They collaborated with Ebi, one of the most well-known and prominent Iranian singers, on the album Yadegari (یادگاری, "Memorial"). The album included the songs Mage Fereshteh Ham Badeh (مگه فرشته هم بده, "Are Angels Bad too")[18] and Kolbeh (كلبه, Cottage).[19]

On their album Shenasnameh (شناسنامه), a song with the same title was originally supposed to be part of the album. In an interview on the show Up Close & Personal with Alireza Amirghassemi, Kamran and Hooman explained that the song had similar sounds to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, and included a social message however they felt that this type of song does not match the overall sound of the album and therefore decided on not including it, although the name of the album remained as Shenasnameh.[12]

Musical Style and Influences[edit]

Kamran and Hooman cited Michael Jackson as their main influence and inspiration in music, fashion, and dance.[12][1]
