Kapralova Society

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Kapralova Society is a Canadian music society based in Toronto. The organization, registered as a non-profit organization in the Province of Ontario, was founded in 1998 with the aim to promote the legacy of Czech composer Vítězslava Kaprálová and to raise awareness of achievements of women composers, both historical and contemporary. To this end, the society maintains its website kapralova.org, publishes an online journal of women in music, The Kapralova Society Journal, and encourages and invariably supports research, sheet music publishing and recording projects promoting Kaprálová's music. The Society also regularly collaborates with public broadcasters on radio programs dedicated to the composer.[1]

The Society's most notable projects designed to educate the public on the subject of women in music include its open access journal and several comprehensive databases of women composers and conductors, maintained since 1998. In 2015, The Kapralova Society Journal was reviewed by ProQuest as "a very important journal that addresses the themes of women in music, both historically and currently, with well-presented, thoroughly-documented, and interestingly written material".[2] The Society's databases of women composers have been favourably reviewed and linked to by college libraries[3], Discovery Channel,[4] and specialized podcasts.[5] In 2018, at the occasion of the Society's twentieth anniversary, the Czech Radio 3 dedicated an entire edition of its prestigious radio series Akademie to the Society in acknowledgement of its contribution to Czech music.[6]

The Kapralova Society is an associate member of the International Alliance for Women in Music.
