Kapten & Son is a fashion accessories company headquartered in Cologne, Germany]]. The company was founded by Fabian Deventer, Johannes Theobald, and Artjem Weissbeck in 2014.[1] The online retailer currently has a global distribution throughout Europe, Australia, North America, and Asia.[2] Kapten & Son began as a watch company and expanded its inventory to include sunglasses, backpacks, and eventually accessories. The company makes frequent use of influencer marketing.[3][4]

History[edit]

Deventer, Theobald, and Weissbeck founded the company with €5,000 and 100 watches in a Münster University dorm room.[5] Following the campus hit, the trio moved forward to work full-time on developing the brand. The bootstrap startup has since opened offices in Melbourne, Australia (2015) and Brooklyn, New York (2016), to strengthen their presence in the Asia Pacific region and North America.[6]

Collaborations[edit]

Since its founding the brand has collaborated with various influencers. They most recently collaborated with supermodel and TV host, Lena Gercke,[7] the result of which are the “Waikiki by LeGer” cat-eye sunglasses. Other collaborations include "Amsterdam by debiflue" with Debi Flügge,[8] "London by anajohnson" with Ana Johnson, "Capri by carmushka" with Carmen Mercedes,[9] "Nice by novalanalove" with Farina Opoku,[10] and "Manhattan by noholita" with Camille Callen.[11]

Awards[edit]

In 2018, Kapten & Son won the German Design Award for “Excellent Product Design” with their PURE watch collection.[12]

Retail dealers[edit]

The company counts Christ (Germany's largest watch and jewelry chain), Breuninger, THE ICONIC, Nordstrom, and Urban Outfitters among its dealers.
