Karen Balayan (born September 10, 1956) is captain of the ship "Cilicia", president of the AYAS Nautical Research Club[1][2] and Board Member at Network State.[3]

Biography

Karen Balayan was born on September 10, 1956. After graduating from school in 1973, he entered the radio electronics department of the National Polytechnic University of Armenia. In 1978–1985 he worked at the All-Union Institute of Radiophysical Measurements, and in 1985–1992 he worked as a leading engineer at the Institute of Applied Physics Problems. In 1985, together with his friends, he founded the AYAS Nautical Research Club. In 1990, he received the diploma of a sailing ship captain, which gave him the right to manage a sailing ship without capacity restrictions. He has been the president of the club since its foundation. He is the head of the "Sailing in 7 seas" project. In 1991–2002, together with his friends, he built the legendary sailing ship "Cilicia", which was tested in Lake Sevan (2002–2003).[4] From 2004 to 2006, he led the cruise around Europe. In 2007–2008 he went to the Caribbean Sea with an expedition in order to find the remains of the Armenian ship captured by the pirate William Kidd in the Indian Ocean in 1698.[5]
