Karen Earle Lile is an American independent art director, producer, radio host, and entrepreneur[1]from the San Francisco Bay Area. While working in the piano rebuilding and brokerage business, she produced one of the first classical music videos that was done in a music video format for the A&E Network. She is also an art director on some of the cancellation series for the United States Postal Service. Lile hosts the radio show Sail Sport Talk with Karen Lile and is a regular on Sports Byline USA's programs.

Early life and education[edit]

Lile is a third-generation native of San Francisco, California. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1982 with highest honors in English.[2] Her works have spanned the public[3][4], community [5] and private sectors.[6]

Career[edit]

Classical music video[edit]

Lile's first public work was interwoven with a new trend emerging internationally, the rock music video. In 1986, when rock music videos were being recognized on news and entertainment magazines in the late 1980's, television hosts would note the novelty of one of the first classical music videos to be broadcast on Arts and Entertainment Network, Kendall Ross Bean: Chopin Polonaise in A Flat, in juxtaposition to the MTV top ten.[7][8]

Lile and Bean, co-founders of Piano Finders[9],[10], used the piano rebuilding[11] company's knowledge of how a piano works, to create a glass box around the piano action to film the inner workings of the piano hammers, as part of the music video.[12]

Lile partnered with the Local Origination Programming the Televents in Pleasant Hill, CA on this production.[13] As the producer, Lile received a nomination for an ACE Award for Outstanding Programming Achievement[14][15] at a ceremony on May 18, 1987 by the National Academy of Cable Programing in the Ninth Annual System Awards for Cable Excellence in the category of Music Single.[16][17]

Art director and Designer[edit]

On May 29, 1996 Lile collaborated with USPS on the USPS release of a New Breast Cancer Awareness Stamp (see Breast cancer research stamp under History and description). [18] She is the Art Director and one of three founders for the USPS Building Bridges Special Postal Cancellation Series.

Lile has continued as an art director and creates the concept and produces the ceremonies for the active USPS Building Bridges Special Postal Cancellation Series. Past cancellations have featured SFJAZZ Center,[19] the Lady Washington and Pier 39,[20] the 100th Anniversary of the Pacific Inter-Club Yachting Associations Opening Day on the SF Bay[21] and a tribute to Music Recording History after the closing of Fantasy Studios.[22]

Talk show host[edit]

Lile began her relationship with Sports Byline in 2015 producing three minute Music and Sports Spotlights, featuring the music careers of sports celebrities like Bernie Williams and Barry Zito.[23] Lile and Sports Byline entered into an exclusive contract in 2019 for Lile to bring the sport of sailing into the network.[24], [25]

The first show, Sail Sport Talk with Karen Lile[26] was placed inside Tittilating Sports[27] to engage mainstream sports fans with the international world of sailing. As a female talk show host, Lile has been engaging with Rick Tittle and baseball and football fans in Tuesday morning interviews of sailing celebrities such as Tom Slingsby, Rome Kirby, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Tracy Edwards.[28] [29][30][31][32] about Sail Sport from April 4, 2019 to the present.[33][34][35]

On February 18, 2020, a new program A Cup of Caen with Scotch began under the Sail Sport Talk brand with Karen Lile and Christopher Caen,[36][37] (son of Herb Caen) as co-hosts, covering the America's Cup and SailGP races. These new segments are a spin off of the title "A Cup of Caen" from Caen's coverage of the America's Cup in 2013 for the HuffPost and are covering the current America's cup races. This is carried on all the Sports Byline and Sail Sport Talk platforms.

Personal life[edit]

Lile cruises with friends on the San Francisco Bay, along the Pacific Coast, in the British Virgin Islands and on the Dhows in Zanzibar's Indian Ocean for recreation.[24] Lile and Kendall Ross Bean were married in the past and had two daughters by their marriage.[38][39]
