Kari Berg is a Swedish singer-songwriter, actress, model, DJ, and author. She was born in Östersund, Jämtland, Sweden. She was the female vocalist of Ashbury Heights and is now part of the EBM band Chaos All Stars and has a successful solo career. She has appeared in a film and has modeled for designers in various genres.
Personal life
Kari was born on 18 August 1986 in Östersund, Jämtland, Sweden, and lived on a farm in the small village of Borgvattnet, Jämtland (famous for its haunted vicarage). Kari currently lives in Umeå, Sweden.[1]
Modelling
Kari was nicknamed The Chameleon by a photographer for her versatility in modeling, encompassing high fashion, alternative, and latex styles. The Chameleon has become her trademark.
Over the years, Kari has been published in publications such as Kamera & Bild, Skin Two, Kupé, Marie Claire, and Göteborgsposten, worked with designers like Atsuko Kudo, Mimi Tran, and Naucler Design, appeared in advertisements for Mariart & Sveriges Frisörföretagare, and participated in runway shows at Umeå Fashion Week and STHLM Fashion Market, among others.[2]
Kari has been represented by Nocturnal Agency, Stockholmsgruppen Models, and Wicked Talent.
Kari also hosts events, and has served as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the German Fetish Ball in Berlin, Germany in 2012, 2014, and 2017. In addition to hosting the entire event, she announced the European Fetish Awards from 2012 to 2017 (with a break in 2016).
Acting
Kari began her entertainment career as an actress, spending approximately seven years in theatre school. This experience later inspired her to pursue modeling. In 2008, she played the lead role in Thomas Di Leva's music video "Öppnar mitt hjärta", and has also participated in an Elegant Machinery music video. In 2012, she had the female lead in the film We are like Oranges, a film about racism in Sweden.[3]
She had a small role in the 2018 film Iron Sky: The Coming Race as Lena The Jobsist.[4]
We are like Oranges
The film We are like Oranges is a Swedish film directed by Cecilia Gärding. The film's premise centers on a young Afro-Swedish man's experiences in high school and examines the consequences of Sweden's youth not learning about its racist past, including Sweden's slave trade and a race biological institute that sterilized 63,000 Swedes. Kari played the role of Sarah, a spoiled but lonely girl searching for belonging. The film received standing ovations at its premiere in Braga, Portugal.[5]
Music
Kari has performed on major stages such as the M'era Luna Festival, Amphi Festival, and the Gothic Festival Waregem (now Shadowplay Festival). She was the lead vocalist of the synth-pop duo Ashbury Heights from 2008 until the band's 2010 dissolution, due to internal conflicts. Later, in late 2010, she joined the EBM band Chaos All Stars.
Kari is a mezzo-soprano.
Solo career
In late 2010, Kari began pursuing a solo career, beginning with a collaboration with Chaos All Stars on the song "We Are The Sinners", which eventually led to her joining the band. She has also collaborated with bands such as Ad Inferna, Psy'Aviah, and DE_TOT_COR. For the song "Deep Dark Desire" with Psy’Aviah, she also did a photoshoot in a red latex dress by Naucler Design. In an interview with Psy’Aviah, Yves commented positively about working with Kari, expressing pleasure at the collaboration and mentioning a future collaboration with her. – Peek-a-boo Magazine[6]
In August 2012, she and Morlock's frontman Johann Strauss released the song "The Sound of the Alarm".
Kari also started guest-singing with the band Dark Side Cowboys in 2012, appearing on their albums Chronicles and Chronicles III.
In September 2016, Kari released a song and music video featuring the band Psy’Aviah, titled "It's Just Words". This song and video addressed the subject of bullying and discrimination.[7]
In late 2016, Kari released the album Music from Fjärilarnas stad, a soundtrack she composed for the book Fjärilarnas stad, for which she also served as a cover model and inspiration for the main character, Vega.[8]
Ashbury Heights
Kari joined Ashbury Heights as their lead vocalist in late 2008, generating significant media attention. Her vocal abilities, previously unshown in a recording capacity, were lauded along with her prior recognition in the alternative modeling community. Their performance at the Gothic Festival Waregem (now Shadowplay Festival) led to positive reviews, easing any concerns about the lineup change. The band continued to garner praise for their 2010 album Take Cair Paramour and subsequent live performances. The band eventually disbanded in late 2010 following a public dispute between the label and the band's male vocalist.[9]
Chaos All Stars
In late 2010, Kari joined the EBM band Chaos All Stars. Shortly thereafter, they released the song We Are The Sinners exclusively for attendees of the ElectriXmas festival in Sweden. In July 2011, their song "Forget Them" was featured on a compilation album by Side Line Magazine. In December 2011, they released "Autumn Nights" with a music video showcasing a gothic aesthetic with rococo furniture and a pillar room setting.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; refs with no name must have content
In 2012, the band released the CD "I Need It All" on February 24th. Their release was met with critical acclaim, with praise for Kari's vocals in particular. She often wears latex outfits, including a recent design by Naucler, featuring a strong military aesthetic. In 2013, they followed up with "I Need It All – Addendum", and in 2014, released the EP "Legacy". Their song "Iron Sky" appears in the Director's Diary of the Finnish film Iron Sky.
