Karina Macias

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Karina Macias is the current mayor of Huntington Park, California.

Macias was elected to the Huntington Park city council in March 2013, and was re-elected to a second term in 2017. In 2015, Macias served as the city's mayor for the first time, and is the mayor of the city until 2020. While serving on the city council, Macias initiated the Youth Commission for the purpose of teaching students the importance of civic engagement.[1] Karina was elected to the city council at the age of 25.[2]

Macias was the subject of controversy in 2017, as she raised money for a 2015 candidate for the California State Assembly who never filed papers to run for the position, and Macias was paid a commission based on a percentage of the total.[3] Macias raised $25,000 for Efren Martinez in 2016, and received $6,800 of the commission.[4] These revelations launched an investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney.[5] Macias was also accused of campaign violations in the 2015 general election, as well as the 2013 general election in which she was elected, which resulted in her being removed as vice mayor.[6] Karina was also the subject of another controversy, where she helped approve the appointment of two undocumented immigrants to positions in the city government.[7][8]

Macias, along with fellow council members Graciela Ortiz, Marilyn Sanabria, and Johnny Pineda, was also the subject of a proposed recall election in 2016. However, the election never came to fruition as a result of the required documents not being submitted to the city clerk.[9]

Macias graduated with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Psychology from Mount St. Mary's University in 2010 and received her Master's degree in International Studies from Chapman University in 2013. After graduating, Macias worked with the Sisters of St. Joseph as an Assistant Justice Coordinator, and provided educational services on a variety of social justice topics.[1][2]
