Karl Bruckner was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips in the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers during the 1990s. He was a defender and midfielder, playing for Melchester Rovers, and Germany. He first appeared in the strip in November 1991.
He was known as the "Bresden Bull"
Career
Club
Roy Race first noticed Karl Bruckner when the Rovers played German side Bresden in the UEFA Cup in October and November 1991. Rovers went out of the competition on the away goal rule but Karl was impressed by the Rovers and on 30th November he signed for them to bring experience to the Rovers' squad.
With a similar fiery temperament to Johnny Dexter the two clashed in the early days but he soon settled into the team. He came with the tag of being "The Bresden Bull" and was the cornerstone of the defence in the early 1990's.
Karl returned to his native Germany following the "scandal" revelations which rocked the club and joined Rassburg. He is now player-coach and in the 1998/1999 season led them to victory in the UEFA Cup.
International
Bruckner was a German international.
Style of play
He played as defensuve midfielder and centre back. In the style of the classic '90s German sweeper, Bruckner loved carrying the ball forward from the back, but was also a fearsome tackler.
Managerial career
He left Rovers after relegation to become player-manager of Rassburg.
Legacy
He was one of the best German players who played on English soil, in the comic football universe (others to be mentioned were Klaus Bergen of Riverton United). The "Bresden Bull" was a world class German international. Bruckner helped Rovers win the 91/92 Premier League title. Roy was impressed with Karl's confidence and attacking ability from his defensive position.
Roy and Rocky in the 2000 Roy of the Rovers Annual named Karl as substitute for their all-time greatest Rovers line up.
Personal life
Karl is happily married to Helga.
Honours
All of these records are fictional of course, and only date as far as 2000, the last fully completed season of the comic strip.
