Karl Fiorini (born 1 December 1979) is a Maltese-born composer and artistic director based in Paris.

Biography

Following studies with Charles Camilleri, privately and at the University of Malta (1999-2002), he went to London, completing a master's degree in composition with Diana Burrell at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (2004-05), and a doctorate in composition with Michael Zev Gordon at the Royal College of Music (2006-15). In London he taught 20th century aesthetics at the Royal College of Music (2007-09). Composer residences have included Orquestra do Norte in Portugal, and, in France, Conservatoire Olivier Messiaen, Avignon, and Conservatoire du Val d’Yerres. He settled in Paris in 2008. He is Artistic Director of the Valletta International Spring Orchestra Festival, inaugurated in 2007.

His music has been played, televised or broadcast by the Baltic Neopolis Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinů Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, European Contemporary Orchestra, European Union Chamber Orchestra, Latvian Chamber Orchestra, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, Sudecka Philharmonic, and Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2015 his Second Symphony was premiered by Brian Schembri at Expo 2015 in Milan, and his Cadavre exquis was performed at the Venice Biennale. Three European Capitals of Culture have commissioned or programmed his works: Marseille-Provence 2013 (Entente cordiale); Mons 2015 (Cadavre exquis); Valletta 2018 (Pentimenti).
