Karolina Częczek is a Polish architect and educator who lives in New York, NY. She is a Principal of Only If, a New York City-based design practice for architecture and urbanism, founded in 2013, together with architect Adam Frampton.[1][2]

Professional Life[edit]

Częczek studied architecture at the Tadeusz Kościuszko University of Technology in Kraków, Poland and received a Master in Architecture.[1] She subsequently studied as a Fulbright scholar at the Yale School of Architecture, where she received an Post-Professional Master in Architecture and was the 2015 recipient of the William Wirt Winchester Travel Fellowship, the school's most prestigious award.[3]

Częczek is currently a Principal of Only If, a New York City-based practice for architecture and urbanism.[1][4] Her work focuses on the potential of vacant irregular land in New York City,[5][6][7] and the design of housing in residual spaces, including the firm's Narrow House, completed in 2021.[8][9][10]

Previously, she worked at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in Rotterdam and Hong Kong.[11][12][13]

Her writing and research also explores the swimming pool as public space and an architectural type.[14] Her independent research on Warsaw’s public pools and proposal to revitalize Skra Sport Complex was selected as finalist for Stefan Kuryłowicz Foundation's 2015 Practice scholarship program for young architects.[15]

Częczek is also a Critic at the Yale School of Architecture[16] where she has taught alongside Tatiana Bilbao and Frida Escobedo.[2] She has taught as a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, as a Visiting Critic at the Syracuse University School of Architecture,[17] as an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky College of Design.[18]
