Katarua is a wild mushroom which is a type of truffle. It is the fruiting body of a subterranean Ascomycete fungus, predominantly one of the many species of the genus Tuber. Truffles are ectomycorrhizal fungi and are therefore usually found in close association with tree roots. These edible fungi are collected at the onset of monsoon, when villagers living around the forest start collecting katarua buds from shala tree roots, a species of tree belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family.
