Kaushal Panwar is an Indian Dalit rights activist and academician. She was awarded the Ambedkar in India Samman 2012 given by Ambedkar in India magazine published by Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. She was presented an award by National Commission for Women, Govt. of India on International Women's Day in March 2013.[4]

Early Life and education[edit]

Panwar was born in Rajound village in the Kaithal district of Haryana, into a family of the Valmiki caste.[3] [5]She has two older brothers.[6] Her family was engaged in manual labour and scavenging. Despite their financial constraints, Panwar’s father ensured that she went to school.[7] In her early teens, she developed an interest in Sanskrit religious texts, as it gave her an insight into the intricacies of caste discrimination in India. [3] In seventh grade, her decision to study Sanskrit provoked her teacher, who believed that Sanskrit should be limited to upper-caste students only.[3] Despite the caste discrimation she faced, she was still determined to study the classical language. [3] Panwar obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sanskrit from Indira Gandhi Mahila Mahavidyalaya in Kaithal.[3]She had to travel 60 kms every day to attend classes.[8] She pursued her graduate studies in Kurukshetra University, where she studied for her MA while simultaneously working as a labourer in construction sites around her college.[3] [9]She went on to earn her MPhil from Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak and her PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2009.[3] Her thesis was titled 'Shudras in Dharam Shashtras'.[10]

In 2014, Panwar completed her MA in Hindi from Vinayaka Missions University in Salem,Tamil Nadu.[11]

Career[edit]

Panwar is now an Assistant Professor of Sanskrit at Motilal Nehru College, one of the largest constituent colleges of the University of Delhi.[12] [3]She was also a member of the Faculty Research Committee as a guide in Faculty of Arts at CMJ University, Meghalaya. Her areas of academic interest are the study of Dharmashastra and position of Shudras (especially women) in Ancient History, the Varna System, casteism, the language of Shudras and women, and social movements in India. [13] She is a board member of the Safai Karamchari, member of executive committee of Dalit Lekhak Sangh, invited outer member of Affirmative Action at Tata Power Institute. She was a governing body member of Sahitya Sanskrit Academy in 2015-2016. She is also a life member of Bharatiya Sanskrit Patrakar Sangh as well as the World Association for Vedic Studies (since 2016).[4] She is a member of Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday SC/ST Delhi wing. Awards and honours[edit]

Panwar was featured in tenth episode of the television show Satyameva Jayate aired on July 8, 2012, hosted by noted filmstar Aamir Khan. On the show, she discussed her experience of caste discrimination.[15] On July 14, 2012, she delivered a lecture in Harvard University on the Situation of Shudras in Vedas.In the lecture, she discussed the status of Shudras in religious texts such as the Vedas and the Smritis [16] She was awarded the "Ambedkar In India Samman 2012" given by Ambedkar in India magazine. She was presented an awared by the National Commission for Women, Govt. of India on International Women's Day in March 2013.[4] She was a delegate at the second edition of the Brahmaputra Literary Festival held in Guwahati[17]
