Early Life:
Kawasi was born in Albany, Georgia and raised by his grandmother, Reather Weston. Coming into life with tragedy, Kawasi was abandoned by his mother and father at the age of six months old. Growing up in extreme poverty and constantly battling his sexuality, Kawasi suffered from depression and anxiety at an early age. At the age of 6 years old his grandmother gifted him with a radio where he discovered music. The first song he ever heard was “I Will Always Love You “, by Whitney Houston. It was a few days later Kawasi wrote his first song. Kawasi used music to turn his pain into power - recording his first song by age 11, he knew music was his life.
Adolescence:
Meeting his parents for the first time at the age of 13 was a devastating ordeal for him. So much so he failed the sixth grade. He was in disbelief that his parents were not only still living but living as a family with two other children. Kawasi began to focus on academics more and became the first in his family to graduate high school and attend college. At Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, Kawasi was an active member of the community and pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He was a Bonner Scholar and received the Pickering Fellowship of International Affairs by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. He did all that while maintaining a perfect GPA and writing music on the side.
Adult Life:
After graduating Morehouse College with honors, Kawasi went on to work for the US Department of State, under the tutelage of Secretary Hillary Clinton. After spending time in Washington D.C., Kawasi realized that music was his true passion and gave it all up to pursue music. Heading back to Atlanta to team up with Jareiq “JQ” Kabara, Kawasi began working on music full time and released music that documented his journey through academia, politics and music. In 2012, Kawasi moved to Los Angeles, and signed with TW3 Entertainment, under the management of Tom Walsh. After 5 plus years of artist development, Kawasi decided to team up with engineering and production duo “Shaggy and Scoob” to begin work on his highly anticipated debut EP, “Flowers” which will be released in Spring of 2022. This Extended Playlist chronicles the journey of drugs and drug use, as 20 percent of the profits will go towards Mental Health Awareness and Drug Prevention.
