History[edit]

2014-2018[edit]

In 2014, Entertainment Tonight (ET) began posting about Kaylor stating Swift and Kloss were “fawning all over each other” at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.[1] Two days later, grainy photos of Swift and Kloss embracing at a The 1975 concert were posted on ET, who wrote, “what the Internet thinks after these photos show what (kind of? Maybe? We don’t know?) looks like Karlie and Taylor kissing at that same The 1975 concert. KAYLOR LIVES.” The article stated that a member of Swift’s team denied that Swift and Kloss kissed at the event.[2] The embrace between Swift and Kloss was dubbed #Kissgate and caused the Kaylor theory to go viral.[3][4][5]

In 2017, The Ringer published an article about the Kaylor theory and the fan fiction that has resulted from it. The article stated that the most popular Wattpad piece about Kaylor had 1.3 million reads.[6]

2019-2021[edit]

In April 2019, Nylon published an article that speculated Swift would announce that Kaylor theories were accurate on April 26, 2019, Lesbian Visibility Day. Instead, Swift released her music video, “Me!” that day.[7]

In August 2019, Cosmopolitan published an article suggesting Swift’s line, “Fighting with a true love is boxing with no gloves” was a Kaylor reference, since Kloss played a boxer in Swift’s ”Bad Blood” music video.[8]

In 2020, Vox published an article referring to Swift as “a gay icon” and mentioning the theory that Swift’s track, “Betty”, could be a Kaylor song Swift wrote to Kloss.[9]

2022-present[edit]

In 2022, Rolling Stone published an article about fans looking for clues to Swift’s potential queerness in the release of her album, Midnights. The piece mentioned a theory that some Kaylors had after the release of Swift’s Reputation in 2017, “that a collaged photos of eyes used in promotional material and on the album’s physical CD contained a singular photo of Kloss’ eye instead of Swift’s.”[10]

In July 2023, Emmeline Clein’s article, in which she refers to Kaylor as a “”celesbian” fantasy couple, a portmanteau for “celebrity lesbian”, was published in The New York Times.[11]

In August 2023, Kloss attended Swift’s last United States show of The Eras Tour, which led publications to mention previous rumors about Kloss and Swift, both that they had been romantically involved, and that they had feuded.[12][13][14]
