In 1832, the Kurdish pasha of Rawanduz launched an campaign against the Yazidi people near Mosul. Motivated by religious fanaticism and a thirst for loot, he burned villages, captured many inhabitants, massacred them,[8] and some even drowned after attempting to escape.[2][3] This event, known as the Kayoonjuk massacre[9][10][11]
Background
In the year 1832 many massacres took place against the Yazidi people especially in Mosul, about 70,000 Yazidis were killed by the Sunni Kurdish princes Bedir Khan Beg and Muhammad Pasha of Rawanduz.[12][13] This massacre was part of the those events.
Before this massacre in 1831, Muhammad Pasha massacred the people of the Kellek village. He then went northward and attacked the entire Yazidi-inhabited foothill country which was located east of Mosul.[14]
Testimony
According to contemporary accounts, the people of mosul lived in a state of constant fear and insecurity due to repeated attacks by regional powers such as the Kurdish pasha of Rawanduz. They were subjected to mass killings, forced conversions, and the destruction of their homes and villages.
In 1832 the Coordish pasha of Rawandooz, instigated thereto by religious fanaticism and a thirst for booty, fell upon those inhabiting the plains, burned their villages, carried many of them away captive, and on the mound of Kayoonjuk massacred several thousands in cold blood who had fled thither, hoping that the people of Mosul would offer them a refuge within the city walls.[15]
