A keg urinal is a novelty restroom fixture fabricated from a repurposed stainless steel beer keg, most commonly a U.S. half-barrel (15.5 U.S. gallons). Keg urinals are typically installed in breweries, taprooms, and bars as beer-related décor. They are wall-mounted and plumbed with standard flush valve hardware.[1][2]

History

In 2014, Eater Denver reported on the installation of keg urinals at Declaration Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado, noting the unusual fixtures drew attention ahead of the brewery’s opening.[1] A 2015 feature in Confluence Denver also described Declaration’s restroom urinals as crafted from kegs, alongside other design details of the brewery.[3] By 2018, the culture blog Laughing Squid highlighted the trend, publishing photos of keg urinals at Mathews Brewing Company in Florida.[2]

Design and construction

Commercial keg urinals typically use half-barrel stainless steel beer kegs with a cutout opening in the shell, a drain fitted to the bottom for the outlet, and a fitting either welded or compressed into the top to accommodate either a manual or automatic flush valve. Though less common, smaller quarter-barrel kegs are also sometimes used.[4] They are designed as decorative or novelty fixtures for bar or brewery restrooms.[2]

Uses

Keg urinals have garnered a following as thematic restroom fixtures that align with beer culture. Media coverage emphasizes that they attract attention and generate conversation among visitors.[1][2]
