Keg Urinal
A keg urinal is a novelty restroom fixture fabricated from a repurposed stainless steel beer keg, most commonly a U.S. half-barrel (15.5 U.S. gallons). In 2014, Eater Denver reported on the installation of keg urinals at Declaration Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado, noting the unusual fixtures drew attention ahead of the brewery’s opening.[1] A 2015 feature in Confluence Denver also described Declaration’s restroom urinals as crafted from kegs, alongside other design details of the brewery.[3] By 2018, the culture blog Laughing Squid highlighted the trend, publishing photos of keg urinals at Mathews Brewing Company in Florida.[2]
Design and construction
Commercial keg urinals typically use half-barrel stainless steel beer kegs with a cutout opening in the shell, a drain fitted to the bottom for the outlet, and a fitting either welded or compressed into the top to accommodate either a manual or automatic flush valve. Though less common, smaller quarter-barrel kegs are also sometimes used.[4] They are designed as decorative or novelty fixtures for bar or brewery restrooms.[2]
