Keleth the Dragon Phoenix is a 2017 American 2D animated short film written and created by Faith Butterfield and it was the first animated project she did in college. The film is about a phoenix hybrid creature who was born different from two parents of different species, and he tries to be included in three different schools, but he gets kicked out for doing something wrong. Eventually, he enrolls in a school where all flying creatures are diverse and multicultural.
Plot
At the cave, a Phoenix named Dully and a dragon named Drago decide their dragon phoenix mixed creature named Keleth should enroll in a dragon school, phoenix school, or a butterfly school, which he tells them that he can try out each of the schools at least one day. Next, Dully and Drago drop Keleth off at the Dragon School where he gets bullied by a dragon due to his physical appearance. Later, during class, the fire breathing teacher Mr. Fuego teaches the class how to breathe fire, but Keleth volunteers to try, which causes him to burn the classroom, creating chaos among the students. Mr. Fuego forces him to withdraw from the school. Next, Keleth enrolls at the Butterfly school and attends art class with Ms. Botticelli, a butterfly. Suddenly, Keleth pours paint on the students and is kicked out of the school and never returns. Later, Keleth learns how to fly but is taken away by Mr. Aeropotts, the flying teacher, who carries him out of the school. Back home, Keleth tells his parents that he is different from the flying creatures, so they decide to enroll him in Mrs. Brimsby's school, where she tells Dully and Drago to provide the necessary documents so they can enroll Keleth at this new school. Mrs. Brimsby accepts him. The next day, Dully and Drago say goodbye to Keleth as he heads off to school with new friends, where he learns how to breathe fire and finally paints a self-portrait of himself.
Production
In 2016, Faith Butterfield wanted to create an animated short based on her own experiences of segregation due to autism and not being accepted into society, which led her to create the character Keleth based on Larry from Mouse in the House, which was originally going to be animated, but she decided to change to a different storyline. She then did character design, backgrounds, and animation using Toon Boom Animation during her animation class in college.
