Kelli Stapleton is a former American blogger from Michigan who gained national media attention in September 2013 after attempting a murder-suicide involving her then 14-year-old autistic daughter, Isabelle.[1][2][3] Stapleton had previously been an active figure in the online autism community, blogging about the difficulties she faced raising a child with severe behavioral issues. In 2014, she pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse and was sentenced to 10 to 22 years in prison.[4][5][6]

Her case sparked national discussions regarding mental health resources for caregivers, the online portrayal of disabled children by their parents, and media coverage of crimes against disabled individuals.[7]

Background

Stapleton resided in Benzie County, Michigan[8], with her husband, Matt Stapleton, a local high school football coach, and their three children. Their middle child, Isabelle ("Issy"), was diagnosed with autism at a young age. According to Kelli, Issy had been aggressive since she was as young as two years old, primarily toward her mother but also at school.[9]

As Isabelle entered her teenage years, she developed severe behavioral outbursts that sometimes resulted in physical injuries to family members. Stapleton documented these experiences on her blog, The Status Woe, writing about the physical and psychological toll of caregiving.[10] Her blog gained a following among parents facing similar challenges.[11]

In 2013, Isabelle spent several months at a specialized residential treatment facility in Portage.[12] When insurance funding ended, Isabelle was discharged and returned home. Following her return, the aggressive outbursts resumed.[13]

2013 incident

On September 3, 2013, Stapleton drove Isabelle to a remote area in Benzie County. She placed two lit charcoal grills inside the family's enclosed van, intending to kill both Isabelle and herself via carbon monoxide poisoning.[14]

Authorities discovered the vehicle several hours later. Both Kelli and Isabelle were found unconscious and suffering from severe carbon monoxide inhalation.[15] They were hospitalized in critical condition; Isabelle survived but required extensive medical recovery and rehabilitation for brain trauma caused by the exposure.[16]

Stapleton was initially charged with attempted murder. During legal proceedings, her defense cited severe caregiver burnout and a lack of institutional support.[17] Prosecutors argued that the act was premeditated and systematically planned.

In September 2014, Stapleton accepted a plea bargain, pleading guilty to one count of first-degree child abuse in exchange for the dismissal of the attempted murder charge. During her sentencing hearing in October 2014, Stapleton apologized and stated, "Isabelle is not a monster, I am."[18] She was sentenced to 10 to 22 years in prison.[19][20][21] Following the incident and conviction, her husband filed for divorce.[22]
