Kelly Cooney Cilella (born 1979) is an American film producer and voice actress. She is best known for her work as producer of the 2023 animated teen comedy film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

Early Life & Career[edit]

Kelly Higgins Cooney Was born in 1979 to parents Mickey & Bill Cooney and was raised in Rochester, Minnesota, as a teen in Lourdes High School she excelled in basketball, drama, Cross country, and was nominated for Homecoming, she graduated in 1997 and went to college at the University of Notre Dame.[1]

after graduating in 2001, she started her career in the film industry as a production coordinator for Shrek 2 where she even lend a voice as the fast food clerk. she then worked as a development exec, to a production supervisor to eventually co producer of Trolls World Tour[2]

In 2019, she discovered an original animated project in development titled Meet The Gillmans which is a story that writers Brian C. Brown & Eliot DeGuiseppi had came up with based on their experiences growing up in Oviedo, Florida. she loved the story and it connects to her teen life growing up, and had a vision that the film is a teen comedy with a twist.[3]

She sign on to produced the film, and brought in a leadership team that includes co directors Kirk DeMicco & Faryn Pearl (originally Paul Tibbit), co producer Rachel Zusser, executive producer Mike Mitchell, and many others.[4][5]

As a first time feature producer Cooney Cilella brought in many women in leadership role behind the scenes for the film, and having the story shift to the teenage daughter of the Gillman family, Ruby as the main character of the film. The casting of Lana Condor was a turning point for the film, Cooney Cilella knew Condor for her work on To All The Boys I've Loved Before.[6]

Cooney Cilella wanted to make story multi generational and choose your own destiny is a very important theme to the film.[7]

The Film, now retitled Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, distributed by Universal Pictures in co-production with Dreamworks Pictures & Mike Mitchell Productions, and made entirely at DWA Glendale was released in theaters nationwide on June 30th 2023, and eventually became a sleeper hit on Netflix 8 months after its theatrical release.[8][9][10]
