Ken Hor is a Malaysian film composer and music producer known for his work on films such as Takluk: Lahad Datu, Sheriff: Narko Integriti, KL Special Force, Misteri Dilaila, and Abang Long Fadil 2 & 3. He founded Inner Voices Productions and has mentored numerous young composers in Malaysia’s music industry.[1]

Education and early career

Ken Hor was born in Kajang, Malaysia, and started piano lessons at age nine. He later expanded his musical skills by learning trumpet and trombone, performing with school bands at SMJK Yu Hua and the Hokkien Association Kajang. In 2001, he graduated with a music degree from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), studying composition under Martha Lee, music technology under Minni Ang, trombone under Eric Lee and Kevin Thompson, and conducting under Zakhid Khaknazarov.[2]

During his final year at UPM, Ken Hor worked as a studio technician at an audio post-production studio and began creating ringtones for local companies and Mobile Avenue in Helsinki. After graduating, he worked as a freelance arranger and also served as the principal of Encore Music, a music school founded by artists Michael Wong, Chew Paul Wah, and pianist Loo Bang Hean.[2]

In 2004, Ken Hor pursued film scoring studies at UCLA Extension in Los Angeles under instructors including Thom Sharp, the late Robert Drasnin, Craig Stuart Garfinkle, and Charles Bernstein.[2]

Career

Formation of Inner Voices Productions

In 2008, upon returning to Malaysia, Ken Hor established Inner Voices, a contemporary-ethnic ensemble blending traditional and modern Malaysian music. His debut production, Let’s Go Mamak!, earned four BOH Cameronian Arts Awards[3] and was restaged the following year[4]. This success led to the creation of Inner Voices Productions, expanding his work in music production.

In 2009, Ken Hor composed the score for UNICEF’s documentary Dance Language, directed by Richard Widmer, which was presented at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 and broadcast on CCTV. Over the next few years, he worked on diverse projects, including the indie album Platform 11 十一号月台,[5] collaborations with artists such as Mei Sim 云美鑫, Yudi 友弟, Mad August, Joanne Yeoh, filmmaker Yeo Joon Han’s feature film In The Dark 怨鬼 and short films. He also scored television commercials and collaborated with ensembles like Istana Budaya's Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia and Malaysia National Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, The Young KL Singers, Tutan Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and its youth orchestra.

Media Work Expansion (2015–Present)

In 2015, guitarist-composer Lo Shi Seng (known as LO) joined Ken Hor, delving deeper into creating music for films, commercials, games, animations, and other media, while pursuing passion projects and developing personal intellectual properties. Under the banner of Inner Voices Productions, the team has scored several high-grossing Malaysian films, including Sheriff: Narko Integriti (highest grossing local film in 2024 and No. 2 in Malaysia's all-time box office)[6], Polis Evo 3 (highest grossing local film in 2023), Takluk: Lahad Datu (2nd highest grossing local film in 2024)[7], Abang Long Fadil 2 (highest grossing local film in 2017[8]), and KL Special Force. In 2023, Ken Hor co-composed the score for La Luna with his former UiTM student Aziem Rashidi, selected as Singapore’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.[9]

Ken Hor and his team have worked on media projects including the theme song Awake Ft. Zya for the World Electronic Sports Games Southeast Asia (WESG SEA) 2019,[10] accompanied by an animated music video, and the animation series Harry & Bunnie and Astrolology. They have also produced songs for artists including YuHeng宇珩, Kaka Azraff, Iskandar Ismail, Indah Ruhaila, Pink 陈珂冰, KahJun凌加峻 Z Yan 欣彦, Jyin 傅健颖, Celist 青青, in addition to music for numerous television commercials.[11]
