Kenneth Dike Library

Kenneth Dike Library of The University of Ibadan was established in 1948 and named after the University first indigenous Principal and former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kenneth Dike.[1] The library started it operation at a temporary site located at Eleyele, Ibadan the same year the University of Ibadan (then University College, Ibadan) was established. It moved to her present building situated at a central location in the University in 1953. The library has the Undergraduate and Postgraduate section that houses information materials to support the teaching and learning process in the institution.[2] Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan is the main library and there are 13 faculty libraries established to bring the library closer to the staff and students in their various faculties. There is also E Latunde Odeku Medical library located at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan to serve medical students and staff of the medical college.[3] Currently, Dr. Helen Komolafe-Opadeji is the University Librarian.

Collections[edit]

The University of Ibadan has closed to 700,000 volumes of collections (monographs and periodicals) in print and electronic format.[4] The library also subscribe to different academic databases with the support of MacArthur Foundations to support the teaching and learning process of the parent institution.[2]

Staffing[edit]

The Kenneth Dike Library is headed by a Principal Officer of the University with the title of University Librarian (UL). The UL is in charge of the overall administration of the University library.[5] There are Five (5) categories of staff in Kenneth Dike Library namely Academic/professional staff, Para-professional staff, Administrative/support staff, Junior Staff and other categories of staff. The academic/professional staff are those staff of the library with at least a masters qualification in Library and Information Science and with the required years of experience, they are the Librarian 1, Librarian II, Principal Librarian, Senior Librarian.[2] Para-professional staff are those with a Bachelor degree or Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Science and they are on the Library officers cadre.[2] Administrative/support staff have qualifications in another field apart from Library and Information Science. They occupy positions like Principal Secretary, Account Officers,and among other administrative positions.[2] The junior staff of the library are otherwise known as support staff and they are the cleaners, porters, office assistants.[2] Finally there is also "other categories" of staff who are on sabbatical, visiting scholars from other University libraries.[2]

Library Services[edit]

The major services rendered by Kenneth Dike Library to students, staff users include but not limited to: loan services (giving out information resources to users for a specific duration of time), reprographic service (photocopying of pages of information materials), reference service where users are ask the librarian questions and consult reference sources, reservations (for materials in high demand but are in few copies), bindery services, 24-hours library service, e-library service, user education and among others.[1]
