Almost September were an American rap group formed by MC Lyte, producer/DJ Jared Lee Gosselin and producer/singer Whitey White. The group issued one EP in 2009, and performed live in 2008 and 2009.

History

Sometimes credited as Whiteleaf Productions, Phillip "Whitey" White and Jared Lee Gosselin had songwriting/producing credits on albums by Aretha Franklin, Toni Braxton, India Arie, JoJo, Macy Gray and Floetry. They met MC Lyte in 2007 at Macy Gray's Big recording and quickly working on their first song "Beautiful",[3] which was released as a single later that same year.[4]

During an interview with Rock the Bells in April 2021, MC Lyte discussed the group's creative process "(...)it was really trippy. I wound up in a studio session with Macy Gray and I sat there with her and her producers and really vibed with them. We did one song and then we did another song and before you know it-- we had all these songs."[1]

About the name of the group, Lyte explained: "We said 'What can we name the group?', So it was like 'let's take 'em back to school: Almost September,' The title of the group had a lot to do with retooling and re-schooling heads on how you could mix meaningful lyrics with soulful music. Much like how it was done back in the day with Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Gang Starr and Guru -- that kind of feel." And about the musical genre of the group, Lyte would comment: "Soul music was definitely something I listened to (...) was so funny that they called it 'neo-soul,' it was just 'soul' for me."[1]

In May 2008 is released as single "Love", a collaboration of the group with KRS-One and Sleepy Brown.[5] That same month the group published the EP "The Almost September". MC Lyte would comment in a note "I love where I am at right now. The hustle is on and I am grateful to still be busy, and still have a love for the business. On top of that, to have my fans still showing love and supporting me for years, feels like nothing else in the world! I know without them, I wouldn't be able to survive doing what I love." Almost September had its debut performance on July 5 of that year, at The Bob Hope Concert for the Troops. This recital was at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in front of 70,000 attendees.[6]
