Arundhathi is a 2018 Tamil-language supernatural television drama that airs on Sun TV.[1] It premiered on 13 May 2019. Subalakshmi Rangan, Darshak Gowda[2] and Nikitha Rajesh play leading roles in the series along with an ensemble supporting cast including Sonia Bose, Poovilangu Mohan, Meera Krishnan, Akhila and Prakash Rajan.[3]
Synopsis[edit]
Shanmugam (Darshak Gowda) plays the role of an Abroad Men who lands in Chennai along with his fiancée Sulekha (Shilpa Ravi) to take his mother Eeswari to the USA, where he has settled down. He becomes possessed by the spirit of a girl who was killed.
Plot[edit]
The story begins with an incident about 5 years ago that involved a gang chasing a helpless woman, Arundhathi (Subalakshmi Rangan) with the leader of the group murdering the woman by pushing her into a well and throwing a huge rock onto her head, crushing her skull. The young woman later on becomes the legendary vengeance seeking Yakshini
The story then moves forward 5 years, to focus on the story of the present day Zamindari family who are about to hold the opening ceremony for a new temple which they have consecrated.
Once Eeswari (the current head of the Zamindari family after the death of her husband) have arrived, under her command the family started their journey to the temple and on reaching their destination they begin the inauguration ceremony.
After the inauguration ceremony Eeswari asked her nephew, Kathir about the arrival of Shanmugam to which he said that the car driver has already informed him of Shanmugams arrival at the airport in Chennai and soon he will be on his way to the temple. After that, Eeswari had a conversation with the flower shop woman Deivanai, (even though Deivanai is a poor woman, she is very ambitious and conniving in achieving what she desires) Eeswari is attracted to her external simplistic nature.
The plot then focuses onto Shanmugam (the son of Eeswari who was settled and working in the United States for the past 5 years) who lands in Chennai Airport along with his fiancée Sulekha (Shilpa Ravi).
He informs his car driver to drive him back home to drop his and his soon to be wife's luggage first after which he travels to the temple on his motorcycle just to satisfy the demand of his demanding and commanding fiancée Sulekha (albeit he loves her so much no matter how demanding she can be).
While on his journey traveling to the temple, his motorcycle breaks down on the road near a well, reportedly the same well that was the place where Arundhathi was murdered 5 years ago.
While he was repairing his motorcycle his fiancée Sulekha noticed some black figure lingering around the well and informed Shanmugam about what she had observed. Out of curiosity, she challenged her soon to be husband Shanmugam to go near the well. At first, Shanmugam was hesitant but on the insistence of his demanding fiancée he agreed to go.
When he was about to go, a man who was cycling noticed his attempt and persuaded him not to go as the place to the well is very perilous but all the efforts of the man falls onto the deaf ears of Shanmugam and his fiancée Sulekha both of whom continued to proceed near the well. He opened the gate and removed the enchantment holy strings at the gate to enter the well during which a bracelet he was wearing slipped away from his wrist without him noticing it.
After reaching the well, Shanmugam inquired his fiancée about the person whom she saw earlier near the well and while Sulekha was finding that (black figure) a ghostly hand pulls Shanmugam down into the well in an attempt to drown him. Sulekha who noticed this cried for help but ended up fainting when she received a tight slap on her rosy cheeks by that same invisible force.
During this intense moment, Deivanai who happened to be crossing this place after the inauguration ceremony of the newly consecrated temple came to know about current situation Shanmugam and Sulekha from the passerby man who informed her about everything that has transpired and without wasting her time she told the man to inform Shanmugam's family members and quickly tied a rope to a tree, then she tied it onto herself and proceed to jumped into the well to rescue Shanmugam.
She manages to get hold of Shanmugam and was brought out by many other people who came there (after informed by the passerby) together with the family members.[clarification needed] Eeswari was very grateful with Deivanai after this incident as she rescued her only son and heir Shanmugam from a fateful incident and she was wondering how can she ever repay Deivanai for this generous act to which our conniving Deivanai smartly hides her inner feelings to obtain Shanmugam for herself as her husband even though she came to knew about his soon to be marriage with his fiancée Sulekha and reply's that it was her duty to protect Shanmugam.
After reaching the palace, Eeswari gifts her soon to be daughter-in-law Sulekha with a bracelet (the same bracelet Shanmugam was wearing earlier) and Sulekha accepted it but without knowing the purpose of the bracelet (which actually serves as an amulet that protects the family members from being possessed by the vengeance seeking Yakshini).
The next day when they were about to have the engagement arrangements, Eeswari requested Sulekha to get ready and left her to get ready by herself. During this moment Sulekha removed her bracelet from her hand. She noticed an immediate change in the atmosphere but it's to late as she gets possessed (without any awareness) by Arundhathi who then started to go and wreak havoc on the family who in one way or another are responsible for her demise.
After a huge scuffle with the possessed Sulekha, Shanmugam succeeded in putting the bracelet on her wrist. When she came back to her senses she insisted on what had happened and why was she still in her nightie when she was supposed to be ready in her engagement saree, that was when the family members told her what happened and informed the dark history of the Zamindari family to Sulekha and on learning that the Zamindari family is cursed by an evil spirit, Sulekha decides to leave the family at once.
Shanmugam becomes possessed by the Yakshini Arundhathi (Subalakshmi Rangan) the next day while he was going for jogging, he noticed the bracelet on his hand and it recalled him of his memories of Sulekha especially after his fiancée stubbornly left the house even though the family members insisted that she stay with them. Arundhathi who entered his body chose to make use of him in succeeding her mission that's to get justice for the atrocities caused to her by the Zamindari family members. Whether Arundhathi succeeds in her vow and vengeance forms the rest of the storyline.
