Bedrock Linux is a meta Linux distribution which allows users to mix components and software from supported Linux distributions into one distribution.

An example Bedrock configuration a user could have is: Debian's stable Linux kernel, the latest web browser and office suite from Arch Linux, a desktop environment, display manager and the runit init system from Void Linux.

Technical terms

This table is here to briefly explain some of the technical Bedrock terms used in this Wikipedia page.[note 1]

Term Meaning Notes References
stratum a "stratum" in Bedrock is a distribution (eg. a Debian "stratum") "stratum"s can be removed and/or replaced,

but at least one "stratum" has to be installed.

[6][7]
strata "collections of interrelated files and processes" (from "stratum"s)
hijack (ing) "hijacking" is the process of turning a Linux distribution into

Bedrock with the installation script.

once Bedrock has "hijacked", the original distribution

becomes a "stratum".

Installation

To install Bedrock Linux a installation script is used "hijack" a exisiting Linux installation, the script can be downloaded or built from Bedrock's Github.[8]

Post installation

After the installation of Bedrock the Linux distribution will proably not appear very different, on startup the system will ask you to choose a init system and there should be a few new commands available. Bedrock offers a command line tutorial or documentation on their website to help with the basics (or more advanced information and usage) of Bedrock Linux.[6]

Reception

Distrowatch

Jesse Smith from DistroWatch has reviewed Bedrock twice, first April 2019 and again in July 2021.

In the 2019 review Jesse was mostly positive towards Bedrock pointing out some benefits such as being more convenient than dual booting or a virtual machine, but pointed out some issues, such as problems with SysV init or being unable to install KDE Plasma and Xfce using a Debian "stratum".[note 2][9]

In the 2021 review Jesse used Void Linux as the base Linux distribution to "hijack" and again gave a mostly positive review saying "Bedrock is one of the more intriguing projects I have had the pleasure to use recently".[10]

Some issues pointed out during this review, On the first attempt to use Bedrock Jesse updated Void Linux and after rebooting the system it would no longer boot with filesystem errors relating to Btrfs being shown, a new installation with Ext4 solved this issue.[note 3] Another issue was the snapd service (from a Ubuntu "stratum") refused to run because "The service start command would bail out reporting it was unable to run in a chroot environment".[10]

Criticism

Notes

  1. If conflicting information exists from a "official" Bedrock source then you should probably assume it is correct, and not this Wikipedia page.
  2. The Bedrock (0.7 Poki) documentation recommends using the init system, display manager and desktop environment from the same layer ("strata") to avoid issues.
  3. This problem may be related to the known issue(s) of GRUB + Btrfs and GRUB + ZFS, not Btrfs itself.
