Hair Peace Salon is a brit-pop and power pop music band from Minsk, Belarus,[5][13] one from the main Belarusian representatives of British indie rock.[14][15][16] The music of Hair Peace Salon is distinguished by English lyrics with emotional flow and drastic mood swings in songs.[17][18][19][20] The group was founded in 1998 and on today they have released one full-length album Gentleman and numerous singles and EPs.[21][22][23] In the middle of 2013 musicians paused co-working, and some people of their latest lineup including frontman and co-founder Aleh Vial, whom is considered as one of the best rock performers in Belarus,[24] created another rock music band Bristeil,[25][26][27][28] and this was followed by the birth of his solo electronic music project called Helaiv in 2017.[29][30][2][31][32]
History
Early years (1998–2001)
Aleh Vial wanted to play music in the 1996 year yet. In the next year his brother bought a drum set for his band, and that became the first material foundation for the start. Aleh Vial have been wanting to join to them, but he was not admitted because he had not been playing any musical instruments. In the 1998 year Aleh Vial gathered two schoolmates Maxim Devichensky and Alex Vashchilo in his band. These guys were inspired by friends' local music bands and world-famous music groups like Nirvana and desired to play music too.[33] The first years of the band have been spent on learning how to play and experimenting with new ideas and methods of songwriting.[34]
First releases (2002–2006)
Their very first public live performance was given on 22 February 2002 at the Minsk city club "The Base".[35][36] This show was dedicated to the birthday of Kurt Cobain, and the band played a couple of songs. This very band name was found quite unexpectedly on the floor of the friend of the band, Belarusian poet and novelist Alexandr Yak. It was a crumpled piece of paper on which was written one of his English prosimetrical works titled "Hair Peace Salon".
In the same year their original drummer Alex Vashchilo left the band and Artur Luchkov became his successor.[37] The young band with him participated in various concerts and performed at the music festival "The Fresh Wind", which took place in BNTU in September.[37]
Pretty soon the number of the band members was increased to a quartet with the addition of new solo guitarist Vadim Dubina. So, to the 2003 year the band became assembled in a classical structure of the rock ensemble of four people: rhythm guitar, solo guitar, bass guitar, drums. They played on the festival of avant-garde mode in Minsk on March.[37] Then Hair Peace Salon recorded the single from two songs "Next Level" for promotional purposes, and it was released in early 2004.[38]
In June 2004 Hair Peace Salon together with the Jitters band played at the international festival “Piirideta Muusika” (Estonian: «Music without borders»), which took place in Narva (Estonia).[37] At the same time Aleh Vial (guitar, vocal) and Artur Luchkov (drums) were playing in the other indie and alternative rock band Jitters,[39][40][41] which was being headed by its frontman Konstantin Karman, whom was playing on bass as well as singing lead vocal parties there.[42][43] In general, players from both bands were performing at the same concerts often, producing similar music in the British wave style, so their members knew each other well and were friends.[44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54] The band was taking steps onto the grunge scene, actively playing on the Nirvana influenced gigs during the second part of 2004.[55]
Their lead guitarist Vadim Dubina left the group due family circumstances in 2005.[37] There were a few months without a solo guitar player, but eventually at the end of searching and experiments Hair Peace Salon found Vadim Isaev, guitarist from Zhodzina, the familiarity with whom came to fruition via the newspaper "Muzykal'naya Gazeta".[54] They hit the road to successfully play at the Basovišča'05 festival in Poland in July,[56][57] and at the musicfest "Rock-kola-2005" (Polotsk) in December.
Their next CD was released in the same 2005. It contained the full EP "Hover" with the self-titled lead single,[58] which was taken to be presented on the music compilation of various alternative rock artists "Spotlight On" released on the label Matchbox Recordings on 14 November 2005.[59][60][61] In October, the frontman Aleh Vial stopped cooperation with the amicable Jitters band,[62] where he played guitar and was a backing vocalist in parallel, because of specific technical and logical reasons and to devote more time to his band.[63][64][65]
At the end of spring 2006, drummer Artur Luchkov became exempt from the side duties in Jitters too, and the quintet spent that year performing on stage, in addition to concerts across Belarus,[66] participated in some abroad festivals such as Polish "Rock bez Igły" (Tychy),[67] "Wioslo Jacwinga" (Suwałki), "Fiesta Borealis" (Olecko).[68][47][54][37][54][69] Also, the musicians showed up at the concert in support of the series of self-titled compilation albums “Songs of Freedom” led by Neuro Dubel, N.R.M., and some other prominent Belarusian rock bands and held at the Bangalor square in Minsk on 25 August 2006.[70]
Gipsy and in Tune (2007–2009)
2007 year became the year of the second EP release. All songs on it were performed by all four official members of the band while keyboards parties were played by a few different session musicians.[71][72] The band got the nominee in the category "Rush of the year" at the "Рок-коронация 2007" award show in February,[73] won a selection into the final in May[74] as the final itself of the contest “ИдиНаРок” in June with its prize as a song record in a professional music studio,[75] performed at the biggest country stages during the Day of the city Minsk and at the festival "Ambasovišča" was held by the Belarusian embassy of the US in September,[76] and became just a semi-finalist on the international live music competition Global Battle of the Bands, on which they were performing during the second part of the 2007 year,[77][78][79] because of voting tricks that skewed the semi-final results.[37][80][81]
After tinkering with sessional keyboardists prior to and on the “Acoustics of Spring” March presentation in view of a half of the year business trip of Konstantin Karman,[82][83][84][85][86][87][88] to the end of 2007 the number of the official members of the band was increased, as he paused the existence of his band Jitters and was invited to play in Hair Peace Salon on a full-time basis.[89][10][63][12] The band already had a full-time bass player, and because he had bought a Roland JP-8000 on his business trip to Scotland, he became a keyboardist with singing vocal parties as well as composing songs.[78][90][91] On 28 October 2007 the EP Gipsy was released. The new look of the band was shown at the presentation of the EP Gipsy supported by Open Space and some other musicians and friends of the band on 18 November 2007.[92][93][94][95]
On 25 October 2007 the split album named Split Before, Together Now was released on the West Records label to promote this new collaboration.[14][78][78][96] This CD contained Hair Peace Salon (Gypsy) and Jitters (Pick Me Up) EPs with the original artwork filled with two laced together shoes as a symbol that there were two bands, but since this release they are united now.[97][78][98][99][7] “The guys from HPS have always admired the creativity of the not very famous but beloved in certain circles Jitters band. And today they caught up them in skill, came near, and even outstripped them in some ways,” highlighted Elena Sobolevskaya from the newspaper Mzykalnaya Gazeta the music standards of both britpop and brit rock collectives in her album review.[7]
In addition to regular gigs, given circa 30 live shows in the 2007 year,[100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107] musicians were successfully participating in various music contests, such as "Musical Playoffs" (semi-finalists),[100][101][78] "Golden Acoustics" (the winners),[108][101][109][110][111][112] "Rock Sparring" (got the prize of studio recording).[113][101]
The official video on the self-titled lead single of the EP "Hover" featuring new band member Konstantin Karman was filmed in February 2008 to be showcased on the television program «Pro движение+».[114][115] During the first part of the 2008 year, the brand new single "Stand The Rain" was recorded at the OSMOS studio as a prize for the winner of the contest "ИдиНаРок".[116]
In March 2008 the lead guitarist Vadim Isaev left the band.[117] That was a hit during the record sessions of the upcoming EP, and although the band tried to find a new solo guitarist, these efforts fell short.[118] Despite this, the remained quartet decided neither to slow their recording tempo, nor to decrease the number of live performances.[37][119] They took the second place in the contest "Музыкальный спарринг".[120][37] The very first presentation of the EP In Tune was held in the "Bronx" club on its release date on 1 November 2008 supported by the folk band Akana-NHS with Irena Kotvitskaya and Rusya from Indiga.[121][122][123][124][125][126][127] This CD was filled with four songs, including one bonus-track.[128][116][129] Notwithstanding the fact that Vadim Isaev was not a band member anymore, his solo guitar parties were denoted on two recordings on this EP "Like A Whale" and "Stand The Rain".[130]
As a winner of preliminary rounds together with Open Space,[131][132][133][134][135][136][137] in January 2009 the band played on the local final of the Bandscan festival,[138] the final of which had to be taken place in Sweden, but they took the second place only while The Toobes became the victor.[139][140][141][142] The official video on the single "In Tune" was shot in February,[143][144][145] and the full edited clip went on public in December.[146][147][148] During the springtime, drummer Artur Luchkov left the band as a result of disagreements within Hair Peace Salon, but after brief searching Alexey Kuznetsov, ex-member of Prophetic Dream, Iris7,[103] and some other bands, was seated in the drum chair.[149][150] During the upcoming period of the year, Hair Peace Salon was working in the studio on new music materials, getting experienced with acoustic[151][152][153] as well as rock programs,[154][155][156][157][158][159][160] and often playing gigs together with the friendly to them British wave band Open Space like for years before,[145][161][162][163][105][107] and more.[139][164][165][166][167][168][169][170][171][172][173][174]
As a participant in the project "Tuzin Gitou. Perazagruzka" from the web-portal "Tuzin.fm" and the public campaign "Budzma Belarusians!", the band re-sang its song "Ice Age" in the Belarussian language with the poetical translated lyrics by man of letters Vital Voranau,[175][176][177][178][179][180][181] and that became its first song in the native language.[182] This notable track called “Studzień”[183] was put on the compilation CD of the project released in December 2009,[179][184][185][176] subsequently officially digitally re-released on SoundCloud in 2014.[186] In August the band won a national selection organized by European Radio for Belarus[187] and went to Chernihiv (Ukraine) at the "Be Free" festival to present this mother language version of the song live with Lyapis Trubetskoy, Vopli Vidopliassova, and more Belarusian and Ukrainian rock bands.[188][189][190][191][192][193][194]
At the end of the 2009 year, the band presented a brand new promo look. They fully redesigned their official site with artworks by Polina Pastushenko, director of the "In Tune" music video,[148] to support the release of the brand new video clip on the song "Like A Whale" filmed as a participant of the TV-show "PROдвижение +".[195] In a short periond after that Alexey Kuznetsov left the band in December 2009. The frontman Aleh Vial said later that the leaving occurred because they have not been playing with him in harmony well.[90] In the coming months, Vladimir Agayan, fan of the band who won the new drummer selection,[196] became his successor.[197][198] So, Vial, Devichensky, Karman, and Agayan began to cooperate on a new CD,[148] as they made know on the air on the radio “Stalitsa”[199] and on the pages of the 我爱摇滚乐 ("I Love Rock and roll") magazine.[200][201]
Gentleman (2010–2012)
The band was doing well in the first several months of 2010 winning round-by-round in the “Graffiti Open Music Fest” festival,[202][203][204][205][206][207][208][209][210][211] when on 5 April 2010 the very first single of the upcoming full-length album called Happy for a While was released on the Chinese market with different artwork at first to support the signing of the new drummer,[212] while its worldwide release was 5 days later.[213] That one marked the musical shift of the band towards power pop,[214] while the album had to be released next fall.[215] A new melodic and dress code switch was showcased on 10 April 2010, and the release event in the "Broadway" club was supported by Drum Ecstasy, Кассиопея, The Stampletons, and more.[216][217][218][219][220][197][221]
In September 2010 the band made a double release as the brand new rock 'n' roll[11] internet-single Rolz'n'Rulz was supported by the experimental remix EP HPS Remixed filled with 6 remixes of the songs from two latest singles from a few different Minsk electronic stage DJs in trance, drum 'n' bass, downtempo, and more styles.[222][223][224][225][226] That remix album became a sign of successful live experiments in that music genre with DJ World Government,[227] DJ Waxme for almost a year.[228][229] All of two songs from the singles Happy for a While ("Happy for a While",“Out of Time") and self-titled "Rolz'n'Rulz" were credited with Alexey Kuznetsov as the drummer despite his leaving Hair Peace Salon almost a year ago.[213][225] On 3 December 2010 the band gave an online concert on the biggest Belarusian web-portal Tut.By, performed several songs from these new singles.[230][231][232][233]
In the press release in support of both single and EP, the band indicated that the work on the upcoming debut album will be done by the start of winter 2010.[234] Nevertheless, during the 2011 year the band continued to be focused on writing songs for the forthcoming album,[235] performing gigs more occasional.[236][237][238] 11 tracks were planned to be put that CD initially, while the topics of nobility, generosity, fortitude, lust for life, plus a few oddities, and self-irony had to run through it like a red thread. At the time of finishing of the work on the music side of the album at the end of 2011, the band was seeking for a "true artist" who would draw its artwork.[239]
On 18 March 2012 the band made the official reveal of the first full-length album in a short video clip.[240] Music works from the past three years[241] were merged in the album Gentleman, and this release was started rolling out for free from the official band's website hairpeacesalon.com from 21 March 2012.[242][243][244] It's worth to note that despite the previous announce, only 10 tracks appeared in the final release.[245][246][247][248][249] On the front cover and the CD package were used etchings by Sergei Balenok, one of the most famous Belarusian artists of the 20th century.[250]
“10 good-quality tracks and nothing redundant ” from “the album we can certainly be proud of” via Tuzin.fm[251] received mostly positive response: “beautiful voice, good lyrics, excellent sound, flawless execution, competent flow”, “"Rolz'n'Rulz" rules”, “this collective is just about closer to the standard of the European tradition of combining rock instruments with enough pop melody than all", "melodic and melancholic songs, beautiful guitars, and the recognizable high vocals of Aleh Vial",[6] "the charm of HPS is not just in stylistic restraint and impeccably qualitative arrangements and compositional work, but also in unconditional organicness",[252] "polyphony that sometimes forces to recall the Fab Four gives lightness and a feeling of a large stroke to sound".[253] At the same time reviewers noted a lack of brightness and originality, because the record was being heard like an ordinary British wave album.[6] “Very nice work where individuality is felt” as it was noted in the review of the year by Tuzin.fm[254] was selected in a few tops of Belarusian albums released in that span,[255][256][257][258][259][260][261] and its first track "Borderline" was chosen in the top of the best contemporary Belarusian songs by Lenta.ru.[262]
Following the album launch, a substitution was made in the band which played live as a trio for a short time again, as Alex Stepanovich was found to replace Vladimir Agayan, who left Hair Peace Salon in July,[263] and the new drummer was officially introduced in September 2012.[264] Because of that, the release party show was postponed on 11 October 2012.[265] In this day Hair Peace Salon played a solo gig in one of the most popular concert places in Minsk the RE:PUBLIC club.[266][267][268][269] The band sang the songs from the Gentleman album, some old classic ones, self-covers in Belarusian language as well as a duet on "Garela Sasna", the brand new song with Irena Kotvitskaya, vocalist of the folk jazz bands Akana-NHS and Kazalpin, collaboration on which was started in 2010,[270][8][271] during the live show.[272][273]
Break-up (2013–present)
Supported the new album with a row of shows, acoustic and full rock ones for half of a year,[263][274][275][276][277][278][279] at its third appearance at the annual “Acoustic of Spring” event in March 2013, the band showed some new stuff that will be released under new Aleh Vial's Bristeil band copyright later on: a brand new song in Belarusian “Nieba Abraz” and Lana Del Rey's hit “Video Games” (both are from the Cyruĺnia Svietu EP, the latest one will be actually re-sung and covered in the Belarusian language).[280][281][282]
The band got a nomination "Debut of the Year" at the Rock Profi awards for Gentleman.[283][284][285][286][287][288] The latest show of the band in homeland at this moment was played on 19 May 2013, when Hair Peace Salon gave a joint concert with the pop-rock band Open Space at the Minsk TNT rock club.[289] At the beginning of summer, they were mentioned among competitors to play at the Basovišča'13 festival, but have not made it.[290] Nevertheless, at the end of August they with The Toobes and Dzieciuki got selected to represent Belarus in Poland at the “Cieszanów Rock Festiwal 2013” though.[291][292][293][294][295][296][297][298][299][291]
Got some experience to play together as “VS ½ HPS” in Spring 2013,[275] frontman and guitarist Aleh Vial and drummer Alex Stepanovich with two other musicians founded new Belarusian rock band Bristeil in the wake of the inactivity of Hair Peace Salon in Fall 2013.[300][27][26] In February 2014 the official site was shut down, and subsequently the domain hairpeacesalon.com was merged with bristeil.com [301] The band has never declared about its break-up, but since 2013 there were no new songs released.
Style
Musicians of Hair Peace Salon that started as an alternative rock band at the turn of the millennium, trough the first decade of 2000 with an indie rock. brit rock, and britpop repertoire, became known in the 2010s mainly as performers of English power pop.[221][302] Music of Hair Peace Salon, as it is perceived by music critics, is mostly impregnated with boring and tragic motifs,[221] but not any of its works is excluded from the scope of the famous British rock.[74] The music of the band gives emotions of sadness and empathy, so their work more closely matches the definition of brit rock where depressive mood is present often.[161]
Olga Samusik, contributor for “Muzykalnaya Gazeta”, told about the band's performance at the Basovišča'2005 festival on the pages of the periodical, quite praised its “beautiful brit-rock”, “There is a noticeable claim on the Westernism of the sound. The guys play just like crazy. Basovišča is not their level. We do not understand, why they spend their musical time here, they need to conquer European heights... Hair Peace Salon is a good band, especially for those who are a true brit-pop-rocker”.[56]
In a review of the 2005 year EP "Hover" “Muzykalnaya Gazeta” described the music of Hair Peace Salon as “guitar rock in English, rich in ideas, spectacular, which sends you to prog music (what the hell, it is as if brit rockers got complicated)... great vocals. As it is «approved» for this kind of music, arrangeable emotions are poor.”[303] In general, the sound of the group is entirely compared to the music of Jitters; after listening to promotional discs for the 2005 year of both bands, О’К put this notion on paper in the same issue of the newspaper, “everything that is written about HPS can be written about Jitters. Maybe “The Jitters” are a little sharper. A half of the members of Jitters completely plays in Hair Peace Salon... or vice versa”.[304]
Colleagues of musicians from the Caravan band, when they were asked a question by the newspaper “Muzykalnaya Gazeta” about collectives that they like, in the second January issue of 2005 chose “excellent collectives” Hair Peace Salon and Jitters, because “they play original music”.[305]
After one of their concerts by the time of September 2006, columnist for the “Muzykalnaya Gazeta” newspaper Slap highly praised the band, “There was an impression that this music is already crowded in a small club room. Taking into account the incandescence of emotions, the quality of material, and its play, it was obvious that it is time to go onto big stages and to a large audience for the guys”.[306][164]
With the advent into the line-up Konstantin Karman on synthesizer in 2007, overall sound became even more profound, romantic, and intense.[74][7] Following the results of listening to the album Split Before, Together Now “Muzykalnaya Gazeta” definitely attributed the creativity of musicians to the British rock scene, because “the bands which belong to britpop (Travis, Radiohead, Muse, Blur, Coldplay) have much in common, they are known, therefore they can be attributed to something... "salons" have something in the sound that is close to all of these collectives, with their own characteristics, of course, but it is known in the same way”.[7]
Tat'yana Zamirovskaya from the weekly “BelGazeta” described Hair Peace Salon's music in the review of the same album with the following words, “brit rock with dizzy harmonies' weaves à la The Mars Volta, technical guitar arpeggios à la Muse, and neurotic-sensual intonations à la Travis... some HPS tunes inexplicably reminiscent the new album of Radiohead (released after the disc material has been recorded!)”.[98] Another Radiohead comparison was made by her via BelaPAN in 2009.[307]
EP In Tune from 2008 was honored in the media as “melodic, romantic and full of bright sadness but very rhythmically knocked together pop music”.[129]
Elena Sobolevskaya from the music newspaper “Muzykalnaya Gazeta” wrote in 2007, “it has been known for a long time that Hair Peace Salon is not music for the masses”.[86] The Belarusian music portal LiveSound.by described the artistry of Hair Peace Salon upon a conjoint live show with brit rockers also Open Space in June of the same year in a kind of identical way, “Creativity is not for everyone, to some extent aristocratic, with no pretensions to have a mass character”.[161]
Tuzin.fm's expert Seviaryn Kviatkouski once stated that the music of the band reminded him Czerwone Gitary and Paul McCartney in today's brit pop stylistics.[308]
“It is an illustrative example of how a band achieves success and fame by means of creativity,” wrote Aresha from the LiveSound.by music portal.[95]
Language issue
The members of the group, which during its first ten years was English only,[175] in the interview to the Belarusian alternative music portal xlam.by in the mid-2000s suggested that due to the fact that they have not sung in the Belarusian language, they had problems with being invited to festivals and on-air rotation, despite the high-quality creative side, and on the direct request of the journalist whether they will be writing songs in the Belarusian language, Aleh Vial and Maxim Devichensky answered in the negative, while the other part of the players headed by Artur Luchkov and Andrey Kozik was in favor to try.[33] Once again, Konstantin Karman replied about that issue to the "Tuzin.fm" portal in 2007 like this, “We are not poets – to write and express thoughts in English is even easier. And the presence of certain English-speaking culture in Belarus means that our country had to do with Europe, which for the most part sings in English”.[78]
However, over time the band “discovered unusual grace and the melody of the Belarusian language”, as it was admitted to the news agency «Минск-новости» in 2015 in shared memoirs about the experience of writing its first song in the native language “Studzień”.[309] The path to demanded Belarusization[310][311] was supported by the self-cover of “Gipsy” on the lyrics of Vital Voranau as well as “Ciańki”.[312][313] Furthermore, during the premiere of the latest single “Garela Sasna” on Tuzin.fm lead singer Aleh Vial completely convinced the public, “We will continue to strive to have more of the native language in our creativity”.[314]
Band name
One day the name "Hair Peace Salon" has been suggested by a friend of Aleh Vial who has been making music too. Aleh Vial saw a piece of his lyric to the song called "Hair Peace Salon". His friend took this spelling from an American film, it was just a sign on a house. Aleh Vial made a research and not found any bands called like this, and only such a hairdressing salon in Denver, Colorado was detected.[33] Another writing of "Hair Peace" was beign investigated by Aleh Vial on a window in the documentary about John Lennon and Yoko Ono Bed-In.[33]
