It is recognized as a California Distinguished School.[2]
Academics
Sutter Middle school has slightly above average academics compared to other middle schools in California. It is ranked #257 out of the 880 middle schools in California. Sutter has many official and unofficial extracurricular clubs. The main clubs are their Science Olympiad, Speech and Debate, Math Club, and Hands4Hope. Sutter's Speech and Debate team has done well in national competitions. The Science Olympiad team is above average, often scoring high places in regional and state tournaments for Division B. Sutter's Math Club has won their chapter in Mathcounts for 3 years in a row.[3] Hands4Hope has helped many fundraisers in its past 4 years of existence.[4]
A new challenge test system will be implemented in the 2026 school year. Under certain conditions, some students are allowed to skip math grades. If a 5th grade student scores a Level 4 on the Math CAASPP test and a Level 4 on the Renaissance Star Math test they will have the option to take a placement test, potentially allowing them to skip 6th or 7th grade math classes. The old system allowed students of any grade level to take a challenge test for any math level.
Sutter has a higher level of English known as Honors English that learns a more advanced version of the normal English class. The class has a stricter grading format and requires a B (80%) or higher to pass. In order to enter the student has to have a B or higher in their current English class and score a level 4 on the Renaissance Star Reading test.
Sutter has a yearly "Serenade Under the Stars" event, where students' musical talents are showcased. Music at Sutter includes a jazz band, wind ensemble, advanced orchestra, and an advanced choir. In 2024, Sutter's jazz band won a "Concert in the Park" competition in Sacramento.[5]
School history
Sutter Middle School is located in the former Folsom High School building before its location was changed in 2000. Before Sutter Middle existed, students in Folsom attended Folsom Middle School. A major fire on June 22, 1959 destroyed most of the original buildings on the campus. Between 2016 and 2020, the buildings that were ~60 years old were modernized.[6]
In 2022, Sutter attempted banning cell phones by forcing students to put them into Yondr bags, but it was removed the following year. These bags could only be opened after school at special stations scattered around the school or by using a magnet. Cellphones are still no longer permitted on campus.[7]
Sutter Middle School is a feeder into Folsom High School, while its counterpart and rival Folsom Middle feeds into Folsom High's rival Vista del Lago High School
