Kevin Gast is a South African-American entrepreneur, engineer, and business executive who serves as the Co-Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of VVater Holdings Inc., an Austin, Texas-based water treatment technology company. He is known for co-developing the Farady Reactor system and the proprietary Advanced Low Tension Electroporation Process (ALTEP) technology. Under his leadership, VVater became the first company in history to win TIME's Best Inventions, CES Best of Innovation Award, and World Future Award in the same year (2025), an achievement referred to as the "Triple Crown of Innovation."[1][2]

Early life and background

Kevin Gast was born in South Africa in 1983 to a family with Dutch and German heritage and a multi-generational background in engineering and construction. His family's engineering lineage traces back to Lambertus Gast, who emigrated from Prussia.[3]

In November 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gast immigrated to the United States with his wife and three daughters, settling in Austin, Texas.[4]

Career

GAST Global (2001–2020)

Gast began his professional career at GAST Global, a South African-based multinational conglomerate founded by his family. In 2001, he was appointed CEO, while his father, Dr. Gast, assumed the role of Chairman of the Board.[3]

Under Gast's leadership, GAST expanded into a multifaceted international entity operating in over 36 countries across diverse sectors including construction, civil engineering, geosynthetics, waterproofing, mining, pipelines, consulting, property development, hospitality, and pharmaceuticals. The company completed more than 12,300 projects and received accreditation from the United Nations and World Bank.[5]

VVater (2020–present)

In February 2020, Gast co-founded GAST Clearwater as CEO, spinning off a portion of the water treatment division from the larger GAST conglomerate. The company was rebranded as VVater in November 2023.[6]

As Chairman and CEO of VVater, Gast has led the development of the company's flagship Farady Reactor technology, which uses the proprietary Advanced Low Tension Electroporation Process (ALTEP) to treat water without chemicals, filters, membranes, or biological agents. The technology uses controlled electrical fields to destroy contaminants including PFAS ("forever chemicals"), microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and pathogens at the molecular level.[1][7]

Development of the Farady Reactor began approximately a decade before its commercial launch, with the first lab-scale prototype built in 2017, pilot testing between 2018 and 2019, and commercial deployment starting in 2019.[7]

In September 2022, Gast participated in a panel discussion about the Future of Water at the Goldman Sachs annual Water Symposium in New York.[8]

Technology

VVater's core technology centers on the Farady Reactor, which TIME Magazine described as offering "a new approach for removing contaminants including PFAS, microplastics, and pharmaceutical residues: precise electrical pulses that destroy cells at the molecular level."[1]

The company's technology portfolio includes:

  • Farady Reactors – Electric-field-based water purification systems
  • ALTEP (Advanced Low Tension Electroporation Process) – Proprietary disinfection technology
  • Advanced Dissolved Air Flotation (ADAF) – Separation technology
  • Micro & Nano Bubble technologies – Enhanced treatment processes[9]

According to the company, VVater's systems have processed more than 4.3 billion gallons of water.[10]

Investors

VVater has secured backing from prominent investors including Tim Draper, venture capitalist and founder of Draper Associates known for early investments in Tesla, Skype, SpaceX, Hotmail, and Baidu.[11] Other investors include Dick Anderson, founding partner of HPI Real Estate, and Stephen Yacktman of Yacktman Asset Management.[4][12]

Awards and recognition

2025 Triple Crown of Innovation

In 2025, VVater became the first company in history to win three major innovation awards in the same year:[13]
