Education, management and consulting career[edit]
Sweeney, who grew up in California, is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley.[1] He has also served as a professor at Berkeley's Haas School of Business.[citation needed]
For much of his career, Sweeney has focused on environmental and energy policy. He was chief of staff at the Alliance for Climate Protection, a group founded in 2006 by Al Gore as a part of The Climate Reality Project.[citation needed] Sweeney directed the National Security and Climate Change Project, which released a report highlighting the security implications of climate change. He also directed the Irish American Climate Project.[2]
Sweeney was Director of Communications at Patagonia, a sports clothing company.[3] He led the company’s green efforts and, at the request of the President, played a significant role in establishing the Fair Labor Association.[4][5]
Politics[edit]
In 1993, Sweeney was appointed by President Bill Clinton as the Special Assistant to Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt.[6]
Sweeney served as press secretary for U.S. Senator Gary Hart during his time in the Senate and on the presidential campaign trail. Hart began the 1988 presidential race as a clear front runner, but an infidelity scandal derailed his candidacy, and he eventually suspended his campaign.[7][8] When the campaign folded, Sweeney moved back into his mother's house and waited tables.[1][9]
He had previously worked on former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley's unsuccessful run for Governor of California.[1]
Personal Life[edit]
Sweeny's father died of congestive heart when he as six, leaving his mother with six children to support.[10]
Sweeney’s memoir, Father Figures, was published in May 2003 by HarperCollins and ReganBooks.[11][12][13][10]
Sweeney currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Sweeney is portrayed by Chris Coy in The Front Runner (2018), a film about the Gary Hart presidential campaign.[14]
