Career
At age five, Keysha penned her first song, which was published in a local newspaper. Keysha then began singing at events across the Greater Toronto Area. She performed the Canadian anthem at several community events and was a member of the popular Toronto Children’s choir (TC3) from age 8-11. With the encouragement of Canadian hip-hop and R & B producer T-Minus, Keysha’s first full-length rap song, Pardon my Swag, was released on August 8, 2008. The following year, Keysha – who enjoys writing – penned several songs and in 2010, released her first single, Hollywood Fresh, which received significant airplay on commercial radio stations across North America, including Flow 93.5, Hot 97, and V 103. A few months later, the video and remix for Hollywood Fresh were released, both of which featured a cameo and verse from popular American hip-hop artist MIMS and feature the likes of Doug E Fresh and Hank Shocklee (of Public Enemy) in the video. Another single, Make it Look Easy, featuring Bassline & JB (a project put together by P-Reign) was instantly picked up by commercial radio stations, making Keysha the youngest Canadian female artist to have three songs in 12 months on the airwaves. Keysha's most frequent collaborator and friend over the years has been young up-and-coming Hollywood actor Stephan James (who will be portraying Jesse Owens in his new biopic), forming a hip-hop collective in 2012 called YTK (with Toronto rapper Jimmy B).
Hollywood Fresh
Hollywood Fresh is Keysha's most notable single to date. This track was released January 2010. Hollywood Fresh sampled La Di Da Di by Slick Rick ft Doug E Fresh. Keysha shot the music video in New York City's uptown district known as Harlem. Featuring landmark locations in the video such as the famous Apollo Theater. The portion of the music video where Keysha is seen exchanging a bag with a man (Phil Pabon) is shot inside the Married to the mob headquarters in the Empire State Building. After 9/11, it is rumored no artist was granted permission to shoot a music video inside the Empire State Building; Keysha was granted special permission. The video features appearances by Doug E Fresh, MIMS and Hank Shocklee, with a special appearance by rapper Cam'ron's pink Range Rover. The video was directed by David Cropper and was shot mostly in and outside of Doug E Fresh's home. Two months after the release of Hollywood Fresh, Keysha released the remix featuring hip-hop artist MIMS, which peaked at number 2 on the DJ League charts.
Leaving label
Keysha parted ways with her label in 2011, stating "Things wasn't right, and for me to stay in the situation, I would have literally sold my soul. It wasn't worth it; nothing's worth my soul," in an interview she did on Droppin' Dimez radio show in 2013. Keysha has since released 3 full projects (in addition to 2 she released under the label), Ran$om (2011), Mona Lisa (2012) and Vanity (2014).
Personal Life
Keysha has a diploma from Seneca College in applied arts.
Philanthropy
In 2010, Keysha started an awareness outreach initiative – KeysFORAutism — which uses social media to raise awareness about kids living with autism and donates funds raised through various charity events to autism research.
