Khalifah I Whitner  (born August 12, 1975) also known as Khalifah I Kojima, is an American, writer, and Illustrator of children's books. She is known for her  ESL picture book

Khalifah I Whitner was born in 1975 to parents Marilyn Wright and Karl P Whitner. She comes from a family of nine children. She grew up in Detroit, Michigan where she was raised and educated. She attended Wayne State University and majored in the field of Near Eastern Studies. She made her second home in Yokohama, Japan; where she lived and worked as an English teacher specializing in ESL Education. Her children’s books are centered around English as a Second Language.(Whitner 2017)[3]

Writing and illustrating career[edit]

She was discovered by Kenny King and hired to participate in creating the voice–overs for  Canadian ESL Audiobook Series Maple Leaf Learning.[4] Khalifah worked together with author Illustrator and musician Warren Muzak who illustrated her first book *My Best Friend* and *Daddy’s Tired*. Khalifah later correspondingly illustrate her own work and published several children's books. Khalifah is known for her Classroom ESL Books such as *I Did Not Cry the Blues On my First Day of School* and *Show- and- Tell Surprise*.  She became the founder and owner of Khalifah I Whitner Imperial Publishing located in Seattle Washington. [5][6]

Her writing style is in rhyme and pros while most of her books feature teaching notes and structured classroom activities, for educators.  Her books are created as a classroom resource that helps ESL educators organize and introduce popular American classroom themes".[7]

Her children’s illustrations are colorful, narrating with no set form or style she mixes bright and colorful paints of acrylic, water color, and pencil. Her Illustrations for children can be very diverse with, with small delicate details. While her characters seem, very simplified, with child-like, and naïve features. Her Genre is targeted to appeal to a preschool and primary school audience.

Usually, her themes of her books are child behavioral books, for teachers and parents trying to teach or introduce conduct to children. Her focus is on universal family values, such as consideration, self-disciple, and respect for elders. Khalifah makes her books entertaining, to children while offering educators and parents an opportunity to introduce core values and good behavior. Her books were created in mind for ESL education".[8][9][10]
