Khuzh (Խուժ, regular plural khuzher, խուժեր) is a term in Armenian historiography meaning someone who is not Armenian.[1]
Etymology
The term comes from the name of Khuzestan Province (Persian: خوزستان), which is the province in southwest Iran.[1] Initially, the term had a narrow meaning, applied only to the inhabitants of Khuzestan Province. Later, due to increased mutual contacts, it acquired the meaning of "barbarian" or "savage" in the Armenian language. Finally, the word was used to refer to representatives of all other nations, meaning "non-Armenians".[1]
