Kiari Treval Mhoon (born August 11, 1993) is an American singer, songwriter and dancer. Mhoon gained notice in 2020 as a contestant on season 19 of The Voice. Since then, on May 6, 2022, he released his third studio album "Imagine". Later that year, the lead single "I Can Imagine" went viral on TikTok.[1] Prior to The Voice, Mhoon was recognized by major radio station WCCG 104.5 FM, the Hip Hop station, and WZFX Foxy 99.1 FM of Fayetteville, NC.
Early life and education
Growing up, Mhoon used dance as a way of coping with the stress of his surroundings and then turned to music at the behest of his dance teacher Keith Clowers.[2] His father, Terry Mhoon, recognized his talent very early on and would make him sing every night at the dinner table. After being coached by his father, he would participate in local talent shows around his hometown.
Mhoon was raised in Blytheville, Arkansas, where he attended Blytheville Middle School. He attended Unborn Gift International Ministry and graduated from West Creek High School in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Career
In 2016, Mhoon competed in Washington’s Evergreen State Singer competition, winning him a number one spot to open up for five-time Grammy Nominated superstar Hunter Hayes. One of Mhoon's first singles Yo Ex was played on WZFX in Fayetteville, NC. The song instantly caught the attention of surrounding A&Rs. On May 28, 2020, Mhoon shared his love of music in the latest installment of “Hay Street Live,” a weekly online music series sponsored by the Arts Council of Fayetteville-Cumberland County.[3]
In late 2020, Mhoon appeared on season 19 of The Voice when he was 26 years old.[4] He performed during the blind auditions, unfortunately receiving no chair turns from the judges. Blake Shelton says he sounded like "three different singers." The good news is that when he hits his big, clear money note, they can tell there is some real potential there. The bad news is, as Gwen Stefani points out, they would just need more time than the show allows to really get him ready.[4]
On March 8, 2022, Kiari had the honor to sing for the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, during a Presidential Town Hall in Forth Worth, Texas.[5]
On May 6, 2022, Kiari released his third studio album titled IMAGINE on top music streaming platforms. The song "I Can Imagine" was released as his first single. The song expressed the meaning of being free from judgment, bondage, and being who you really are.
Personal life
On June 5, 2018, Mhoon came out as gay to the public in a Facebook post, revealing he had a husband, saying,"two of my favorite people in the world my mom and my husband".[6] Mhoon married his husband, Derion Lewis, on October 24, 2016, after just 13 months of dating.
