Kids Castle, Castle Academy, better known as Kids Castle or Castle Academy was a daycare center and educational academy in Barrington, New Jersey. It was founded by Maureen Lenahan in 1996[upper-alpha 1] and ran for 22 full school years before closing in 2019. It was located on 500 Clements Bridge Road.[1]
Media attention[edit]
In March 2019, the building abruptly shut down, leaving dozens of kids without education, and many other parents with thousands of dollars in debt.[2] A letter was sent home to parents on the closing day,[3] before anyone had suspicion of the building's closing, prompting many to conclude this was a scandal, most likely to pay off a million dollar debt to the IRS.[4] Teachers at the school were also affected, as most of them had worked for at least 3 weeks without ever receiving a paycheck.
Maureen wrote in the letter, "On February 8, 2019, we lost 35 families attempting to comply with the Office of Licensing requirements. One of the requirements was the finalization of the Suppression System with a cost of $74,000. And a remaining balance of $34,000." Many parents criticized Maureen for waiting weeks before closing, taking payments from people without giving back.[5] A GoFundMe was set up to raise the money Maureen owed to parents and teachers.
