Between 13:01 and 13:06 GMT on 4 January 2019, Lee Pomeroy, who was riding with his 14-year-old son, was fatally stabbed on board a South Western Railway service from Guildford to London Waterloo.[1][2] The attack occurred as the train was travelling between London Road and Clandon stations in Surrey, with the train subsequently being terminated at Horsley where emergency services dealt with the stabbing.[2] The attacker left the train at Clandon station, and a major police manhunt lasting 17 hours went over overnight while the suspect remained at large.

Sequence of events[edit]

The train involved in the attack, headcode 2D38, was a South Western Railway commuter service from Guildford to London Waterloo, calling at all stations along the way and operated by a pair of four-carriage Class 455 electric multiple units.

Train 2D38 departed from platform 1 at Guildford station on time at 12:58 GMT. The first stop along the route was London Road, where both the victim and the suspected perpetrator boarded the train separately at 13:01; they are not believed to have known each other prior to the stabbing.[2] Subsequently, a 'vicious fight' occurred on board the train after it had departed from London Road, during the course of which the victim was fatally stabbed. Subsequently, train 2D38 arrived at Clandon on time at 13:06, where the suspected perpetrator fled from the train and exited the station.

The train departed Clandon station at 13:07 and continued to the next station along the line, Horsley, where it arrived on time at 13:11 and was met by police officers.[3][4] The train was subsequently terminated at Horsley, and onward passengers were transferred to alternative means of transport. The South East Coast Ambulance Service were called to the station at around 13:30, sending two ambulances to the scene; the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance also attended the incident. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Background[edit]

Pomeroy's murder was the fourth in London in 2019, as the city now experiences more murders than New York amidst a "serious knife crisis," according to Spain's El Mundo.[5]

Legal proceedings[edit]

Search for suspect[edit]

Superintendent Paul Langley said that British Transport Police were working with Surrey Police and National Police Air Service.[2] He also said that the suspect was seen heading in the direction of Dedswell Drive.[2]

The suspect was described as black, in his 20s or 30s, slim with a beard, dressed in black with white trainers.[2]

The suspect was arrested at an address in nearby Farnham around 06:00 on 5 January, along with a 27-year-old woman who police believe assisted the suspect in hiding.

On 6 January, a man, 35, with no fixed address,[6] was charged with murder, and a woman was charged with assisting an offender.[7][8][9].

Court proceedings[edit]

The next court hearing is scheduled for 7 February.[10]

Effect on transport[edit]

The train involved was timetabled to continue through to London Waterloo; following the attack, it was terminated at Horsley, where emergency services attended. Subsequently, all trains were suspended between Guildford and Effingham Junction, with replacement buses provided.[4] Additionally, Horsley station itself was cleared and cordoned off by police to allow investigations to take place.[3] The train involved in the stabbing was removed from the scene to the maintenance depot for further forensic testing several hours after the attack, and Horsley station was reopened. All services were restored by the evening of 4 January.[2]
