Jayshawn Kylek Rowland[1] (born August 24, 2000) better known as Killval is an American rapper, singer and songwriter from Richmond, Virginia. He gained recognition in 2020, after his song "So Long" went viral and gained millions of streams on Spotify after its increased use in Fortnite gaming montages.[2][3]

Jayshawn Kylek Rowland was born on August 24, 2000, in Richmond, Virginia.[4]

Career

Career Beginnings: 2019-2020

Rowland began making music in 2019. He released his first song "Waste My Time" which was produced by Internet Money-affiliate Nick Mira. After slowly releasing singles throughout the year, he released his debut extended play "Luv Digital" in January 2020.[5]

Breakthrough: 2020-2021

After releasing singles continually throughout 2020, Killval released the extended play, "Eternal" in July 2020, which included his breakout single "So Long".[6][7] The song, also produced by Mira, went viral after becoming a trend in the use of Fortnite gaming montages. The song has over 25 million plays to date across streaming services.[8]

Killval went on to slowly but steadily release singles throughout the year, spearheaded by "Waiting 4 U"[9] and "Hate". Both of these singles were included on Killval's third extended play "Romance For Madness" which was released on November 24, 2020.[10]

Quiet year and Good Girls Gone Bad: 2021-2022

Killval had a relatively quiet 2021, while he built anticipation for his debut album, scheduled for release in 2022. He went on to release singles such as "FRIENDS", "Space Ranger", "Quitter" and "Actress" to finish off the year.[11] The most successful of these, "Actress" slowly gained over 300,000 plays in a matter of months.[12] Killval later released his debut album titled "Good Girls Bad Habits" on February 25th, 2022.
