Conejo (Jose Martin) is a Mexican rapper from Southern California. His family roots are in Jalisco, Mexico. The rapper has been recognised by hundreds of thousands of avid listeners for his lyrical word play in both Spanish and English.
Breakout Into L.A. Music Scene[edit]
The albums he produced were first revealed on Power 106's late night underground rapper show cases Pocos Pero Locos. Conejo is well known throughout the Los Angeles area; in an interview, he ironically noted that he wanted to both add to the authenticity of the rap genre in the area, but also use his music as a cautionary narrative for young children considering gang life. [1] [2]
Singles In Early 2000's[edit]
In early 2002, Conejo's single 'Lets Ride' appeared as part of the opening segments of The Shield. It also appeared on a compilation of the show's theme music. Let's Ride appeared in the compilation album alongside rapper Master P's single Ooohhhwee and other notable, contemporary artists.[3]
Movie Roles[edit]
Currently, Conejo is set to appear in the David Ayers film The Tax Collector as himself.[4] In a Below The Belt[disambiguation needed] appearance, Brendan Schaub, former MMA fighter , recalled recently the interaction and cult status surrounding Conejo's music and his acting alonside the rapper.
Conejo appears on Training Day, where he is shown arrested as a gang member while Officer Hoyt is lectured on the streets of Los Angeles by Denzel Washington's character.[5]
Language & Style[edit]
As a bilingual Chicano, he can rap in Spanish and English, which has led to acknowledgement in Mexican newspapers[6], and high regard in California, where Chicano organisations that engage in illicit and licit businesses trace their origin. The rapper's style is also noted for its international and historical references.[7]
Background, Cultural References[edit]
He is well known for a prolific output of over 50 albums in both digital and analog form.
Conejo was among the first rappers to explicitly make reference to Chicano/Mexican gang references, as a member of the infamous 25th street Harpy's gang from West Los Angeles.
Chicano gangs are known for maintaining a positive pro-Mexican outlook amidst duress. This is extremely important to note as they serve as a buffer towards other cultures that may or may not have animosity to Mexicans or connected peoples.
Prolific Output[edit]
While on the run for a murder allegedly connected to him, Conejo established a label 'Felony Case Records' in the mid 2000s.[8] The murder charges were eventually dropped, but not without an intense 14 month stint in LA County Jail.

Conejo In Tijuana, Charges Dropped, Return To US[edit]
Conejo is also notorious for being on the run for 14 years over an alleged murder tied to him. The US had him extradited from Tijuana, Baja California, eventually, in early 2016.[9]
Upon his release from LA County Jail, Conejo was able to reintegrate into the Southern California rap scene. Various artists have collaborated with the rapper since his arrival into the United States.
