Kim Jin-hwan (Hangul: 김진환, born February 7, 1994) known mononymously as Jay (Hangul: 제이), is a South Korean singer who is a member of the South Korean boy group iKon.[1] He made his solo debut with the release of the single album Paradise on June 21, 2023.[2]
Early life[edit]
Jay was born on February 7, 1994, in Jeju Province, South Korea.[1] When he was in high school, he stayed in Davao, Philippines, for 7 months to study English.[3][4]
Career[edit]
2014–2015: Career beginnings and debut with iKON[edit]
Prior to his debut, Jay was a participant on the YG and Mnet survival program Mix & Match. Before the show's premier on September 11, 2014, it was confirmed by Yang Hyun-suk that Jay and two other trainees on the show will be members of the company's upcoming boy group, iKon.[5][6]
On September 15, 2015, iKon released the warm-up single "My Type", followed by lead singles "Rhythm Ta" and "Airplane". The group released their debut album on December 24, 2015.[7]
2022–present: Departure from YG and solo debut[edit]
On December 30, 2022, YG announced on Weverse that all six members of iKon will end their contracts with the company but still remain active as a group.[8] Then, on January 1, 2023, it was announced by 143 Entertainment that they had welcomed Jay and the other five members of the group to their agency.[9][10]
143 announced Jay's solo debut with the release of his single album Paradise on June 21, 2023.[2] The second stage of his solo debut was marked by the release of the EP Blue Moon on July 18, 2023. This single album topped the iTunes chart in four countries: the Philippines, Chile, Saudi Arabia and Slovenia, and placed ninth on the Worldwide iTunes Album Chart.[11]
On July 6, 2023, Jay announced on his Instagram account that he would be enlisting on July 20.[12][13] His enlistment resulted in the canceling of his Japan tour, which was previously scheduled to take place from July 24–28, 2023.[14][15] As a farewell, Jay held his solo concert The Blue on July 18, 2023, at CREST72 in Seoul. The concert was both in-person and live streamed on the Mnet Plus app.[11][15][16]
